Olympia Circuits' Arno Shield lets Arduino newcomers bring their own board

Olympia Circuits' Arno Shield lets Arduino newcomers bring their own board

While there have certainly been attempts at easing the Arduino learning curve, many of these still demand a new board or simplify just one aspect of a much larger universe. Olympia Circuits' new Arno Shield could help strike a better balance between starting fresh and diving into the deep end. It includes all the buttons, lights and sensors needed for 40-plus educational projects, but grafts on to existing boards such as the company's LeOlympia or an Arduino Uno. Owners don't have to add parts or wires; they just remove the shield once they've learned enough to create their own masterworks. The shield kit won't be cheap when it arrives on May 2nd for $60, but it may prove the real bargain for tinkerers who want a full-fledged Arduino board as soon as the training wheels come off.

Discuss HR: 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Blogging For Your HR Business

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Blogging For Your HR Business

Today is the first post in our guest blogger week and we welcome Ruth Hinds who looks at why you should write a blog.? (Ed Scrivener) 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Blogging For Your HR Business If you?re serious about growing your HR business and building a steady stream of enquiries and potential clients, you?ve probably heard that blogging could be a great way to take things to the next level. With statistics showing that 57% of businesses have acquired a new customer through their blog, rising to 92% for those which blog regularly (HubSpot State of Inbound Marketing, 2012), it?s clear that there?s massive potential for businesses that are getting it right. Here are five reasons why you should be blogging for your HR business. It?s a great way to boost your search engine rankings Search engines such as Google love fresh content, and writing a regular blog post on your website is a sure-fire way to make sure that your business appears in the results when people are searching for businesses just like yours. At the moment, your site might rank on the tenth page when users are looking for what you offer. It?s unlikely that anyone will look beyond the first page of results, so you?re essentially just giving away custom to your competitors. A consistent approach to blogging will boost your rankings, and this has an obvious positive impact on the number of enquiries and new clients that you acquire. Blog content can be repurposed for maximum exposure Once your blog post is written, it can be used over and over again to market your business. Of course, you?ll initially share it with your social media followers and include it in your email newsletter. You might send it directly to clients that you think it would benefit. Beyond the obvious though, the only limit is your creativity. You could record the content as a webinar, or turn several posts into an e-book. When you have a robust content strategy in place, it also guides the rest of your marketing materials for the rest of the month. Just one post can guide your social media updates and other collateral, giving you inspiration and one less thing to worry about. You?ll gain a reputation as a thought leader in your field If you?re creating top notch content on a regular basis, people will start to sit up and take notice. They?ll recognise just how knowledgeable you are in your area of expertise, and will be convinced that when they need services just like yours, they should turn to you. Don?t worry about ?giving away your knowledge for free?. Positioning yourself as a thought leader in your field with result in stronger relationships and a feeling of trust amongst your followers, which will only have a positive affect on your bottom line. It gives potential customers a reason to revisit your website So many HR consultants set up a website for their business but then never update their content. The result of this is that potential customers visit once, but then forget all about it. A site that isn?t visited regularly and provides a useful resource for visitors is essentially a waste of money. When you blog on a regular basis, you?re giving people a reason to return and see what you?re all about. Strong blog content, coupled with compelling website copy that inspires readers to take action is the secret ingredient for making your site work for you. It?s a cost effective marketing tool? Marketing your business can cost a small fortune, especially if you?re using traditional methods such as magazine advertising. One of the beauties of blogging is that it?s remarkably cost effective. Yes, you?ll have to invest some time in coming up with content ideas and crafting engaging posts, but this process comes much easier with practice. If you struggle with this type of writing or you just don?t have the time, you could even use the services of a copywriter. Making a small investment to bring in the professionals will mean that you?re better placed for success from the start. You should always make sure that you?re using a writer with experience in your field and a good grasp of what your business does. As you can see, blogging for your HR business can have many benefits when it comes to attracting new clients and boosting your brand awareness. To get ahead of the crowd and gain a competitive edge against others in your sector, it?s well worth considering whether it should be in your marketing mix. Are you thinking about building a blog? What?s stopping you from getting started? Ruth Hinds is a former HR professional with experience at business partner and management level in the public and private sector. Aircraft part believed to be from 9/11 attack found in New York

New York police officials confirm that a piece of landing gear found this week is believed to be from one of the hijacked planes involved in the Sept.11 attacks at the World Trade Center.

The debris was not discovered until recently because it was jammed for over a decade in an 18-inch-wide sliver of open space between two buildings. Police say they know it is from one of the American Airlines airliners because it bears a Boeing identification number. Besides the single piece of twisted metal, there is also a piece of rope and a broken part of a broken pulley police say was likely torn from the roof from one of the buildings.

The odds of the wrecked metal resting there for nearly 12 years ?is amazing,? New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told reporters Friday. ?It had to have fallen just the right way to make it into that space.?

Building surveyors discovered the debris Wednesday. They were inspecting the site of a planned Islamic community center at 51 Park Place, at the request of the building owner. The site is located three blocks from ground zero in Manhattan. The debris was located between that building and a luxury loft rental building located at 50 Murray St.

In a statement, Sharif El-Gamal, president of Soho Properties, which owns the 51 Park Place building, said his company is cooperating with city and police officials to ensure the wreckage ?is removed with care as quickly and effectively as possible.?

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is going to complete a medical exam of the area Monday to evaluate possible toxicity of the site; depending on the outcome of that review, investigators will search for possible human remains. When the aircraft wreckage is eventually removed, it will be housed and secured by the city property clerk.

The discovery follows a similar investigation over the past month at a landfill on nearby Staten Island where forensic scientists from the city medical examiner office have found potential human remains connected to the attack at the World Trade Center. To date, 41 percent of victims of the Sept. 11 attack have not been formally identified.

Zynga Management Pleads For Patience As It ... - Business Insider

Robert Galbraith / Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc's management on Wednesday pleaded for more time for its turnaround effort after the online game maker forecast a steeper-than-expected loss for the current quarter, sending its shares lower.

The embattled publisher behind games such as "FarmVille" and "Words With Friends" reported a surprise profit for its latest quarter through steep cost-cutting, but Chief Executive Mark Pincus said Zynga's business, although stabilized, may not pick up until the latter half of the year.

The company also reported a 13 percent slide in monthly figures for the number of people playing its games.

"We know that 2013 is a year of transition," Pincus told analysts on a conference call. "We continue to expect non-linear, uneven results."

On an adjusted basis, Zynga reported earnings of 1 cent per share, beating analyst expectations of a loss of 4 cents per share. But the company also projected a second-quarter loss between 3 and 5 cents per share, exceeding the 1 cent per share loss analysts had expected.

The results and Zynga's forecast sent its shares 9 percent lower to $3.05 in extended trading.

Over the past 12 months, Zynga's shares have shed two-thirds of their value while investors have watched the company struggle to keep hold of gamers who once flocked to its games on Facebook Inc's website.

"While we recognize the decline in the user base on a macro level, we have the pipeline coming down," Barry Cottle, the company's chief revenue officer, said in an interview. "That's going to happen over a period of time, not something that happens in a quarter."

The company aims to build up its business with gamers on smartphones as it loses users on PCs, but doubts remain over whether this can sustain its revenues and profits.

In recent months, Zynga and Facebook have revised their business partnership, as the game company sought to establish a more independent network even at the risk of getting less visitor traffic from the social media giant.

Over the past year, Zynga's monthly players have fallen to 253 million from 292 million, while its number of monthly paying users shrank to 2.5 million from 3.5 million, the company said.

"The stock is down because of the guidance," said Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia.

But in the long term, he added: "We continue to think that any hope for real growth for this nebulous company really depends on what it can do in real-money gaming."

REAL-MONEY POTENTIAL

In past quarters, Zynga has promised investors that it could tap into a potentially lucrative new revenue stream by launching real-money casino games around the world. The effort kicked off in the last quarter in Britain, where such games are highly regulated.

But executives on Wednesday stayed largely mum about the progress of its real-money inroads in other markets, saying that it could be at least months before Zynga could begin any meaningful operations in the United States, where real-money gambling is illegal in many states.

"We can't tell you when the regulatory environment will let us test that audience," Pincus said.

Other analysts said it was unrealistic to consider the talk about real-money gaming as anything but a long-shot for the coming years.

"They're kind of in dream mode here as they go through the process of trying to materialize the business," said Mike Hickey, an analyst at National Alliance Capital Markets.

"They started with partnering in the UK market, which is probably at least a year from ever being material."

Zynga executives blamed their eroding user base on gamers abandoning computers for mobile devices, but pledged to recapture the market once it releases its slate of mobile games due out later this year.

In the meantime, the company will continue to rely on its brand-name franchises, such as its aging but still-robust "FarmVille" series, to generate sales from both mobile and desktop users.

Executives argued that Zynga, which has been the most popular game publisher for Apple Inc's iPhone, would be better placed than rivals with its independent gaming network to generate game downloads.

"Discoverability becomes such an important factor in how apps are found," Cottle said. "If you look at challenges in mobile, it gives us a distribution advantage in the marketplace."

Still, it was unclear if the company would be able to wring as much revenue from mobile users as it had from desktop gamers, analysts said.

"The majority of their games are lower-monetizing experiences on mobile platforms," Hickey said. "Certainly they've attracted a large audience but it's hard to get much money from that audience."

The company now derives 22 percent of its revenue from its mobile platform, compared with 12 percent a year ago, but that share remains modest compared with similarly sized technology companies such as Twitter Inc, which gets more than half of its revenue from mobile users.

On Wednesday, Zynga reported revenue of $263.6 million, down 18 percent from the year-ago quarter.

For the full year, the company projected that it could be narrowly profitable.

"If we launch the right games and get the right sort of engagement, there's an opportunity that revenues will go up as well," Chief Financial Officer Mark Vranesh said. "2013 is going to be bumpy. It's going to be hard to predict."

HBT: Mets' Valdespin hits walk-off slam vs. Dodgers

Jordany Valdespin?s first homer of 2013 was memorable; he delivered a grand slam off Josh Wall in the bottom of the 10th to give the Mets a 7-3 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday.

It was the second walkoff slam of the year, with Baltimore?s Matt Wieters collecting the other.

Valdespin, who earlier entered the game as a pinch-hitter, got his chance to play hero after David Wright singled in Mike Baxter to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. That gave Dodgers closer Brandon League his first blown save.

The homer was Valdespin?s ninth in 233 major league at-bats. He?s started just seven games for the Mets this season, as manager Terry Collins hasn?t quite figured out how best to use him yet. Valdespin, primarily a second baseman in the minors, opened the spring playing only the infield. However, during April, he?s made all of his starts in the outfield and has yet to play an inning in the infield.

For the Dodgers, it was a tough loss, yet it came with a couple of encouraging signs. Ted Lilly, who hadn?t pitched in the majors since shoulder surgery last May, held the Mets to one run over five innings in his 2013 debut. Also, the struggling Matt Kemp hit his first homer, a two-run shot off Matt Harvey. It was just the second homer surrendered by Harvey this season.

Chernobyl follow-up study finds high survival rate among young thyroid cancer patients

Apr. 24, 2013 ? More than a quarter of a century after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, many children and teenagers who developed thyroid cancer due to radiation are in complete or near remission, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

Following the April 26, 1986 explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in the former Soviet Union, the number of children and teenagers diagnosed with differentiated thyroid cancer spiked in Ukraine, Belarus and western areas of Russia. Most of the patients developed the papillary subtype of differentiated thyroid cancer. Although this cancer tends to be more aggressive in children than adults, nearly all of the patients tracked in the study responded favorably to treatment.

"Even though some patients did not receive optimal treatment initially, the vast majority went into remission after receiving state-of-the-art radiodine treatment and follow-up care," said study lead author Christoph Reiners, MD, of the University of W?rzburg, Germany. "Many patients recovered from advanced cancers. Of this group, 97 percent had cancer spread to the lymph nodes, and 43 percent had cancer metastasize in the lungs."

The observational study followed the treatment and outcomes of 229 Belarusian children and adolescents who underwent surgery in Belarus and radioiodine therapy in Germany. The study participants were among the highest-risk young patients exposed to radiation from the accident.

Despite the risk, 64 percent of the patients are in complete remission and 30 percent nearly complete remission of their cancer. One patient died of lung fibrosis, a side effect of cancer treatment. Only two had cancer recurrences.

The findings suggest victims of more recent nuclear accidents like the 2011 Fukushima accident in Japan face lower risk of developing advanced-stage thyroid cancer, Reiners said.

"Although people fear a similar thyroid cancer 'epidemic' will affect Japan, the quick actions taken to evacuate or shelter residents and ban potentially contaminated foods following the Fukushima accident greatly reduced the risks of children developing radiation-induced thyroid cancer," Reiners said. "In addition, Chernobyl has taught us how important it is to have at-risk children and adolescents screened for thyroid cancer to catch any cases in their early stages. Because public health authorities are aware of the risks, screening programs for children from the Fukushima area already have been initiated."

Other researchers working on the study include: J. Biko, H. Haenscheid and H. Hebestreit of the University of W?rzburg; S. Kirinjuk and O. Baranowski of the Hospital for Oncology in Minsk, Belarus; R. Marlowe of Spencer-Fountayne Corporation; E. Demidchik of the National Academy of Science in Minsk; V. Drozd of the International Fund Help for Patients with Radiation Induced Thyroid Cancer in Belarus; and Y. Demidchik of the Belaruisan Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education.

Humongous Chicago sinkhole swallows three cars, injures one driver

Following a severe rainstorm, a sinkhole opened up in Chicago's South Side, devouring three cars and sending one driver to the hospital. ?

According to the Chicago Tribune, the sinkhole opened up at about 5 a.m. on Houston St. in?Chicago's South Deering neighborhood, where it quickly expanded from about 20 feet in diameter to about 40 feet. Two parked cars initially fell into the hole, and a third fell in as its driver was attempting to navigate around the hole and the ground below gave way. He?was taken to?Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is in "serious-to-critical" condition

According to the Associated Press, the sinkhole was preceded by a severe rainstorm that ruptured a water main in the neighborhood.?The AP quotes a spokesman from the city's water department, who speculated that the weight of the rain-soaked ground could have cracked the cast-iron pipe, which was laid in 1915. Water from the pipe would have then quickly eroded the soluble rock.

"The water will come out any way it can," the spokesman told the AP.?

Sinkholes are often caused by the underground erosion of salt beds or soluble sedimentary rocks, such as limestone or dolomite. Groundwater flows through these rocks, creating subterranean caverns that can suddenly collapse.

In recent years, sinkholes have appeared in Florida; California; Illinois; Washington, D.C.; Pennsylvania; Guangzhou, China;?Guatemala City;?Quebec;?Milwaukee; and Germany.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani police said on Tuesday they found 45 kg (100 lb) of explosives hidden in a car near the residence where former president Pervez Musharraf is under house arrest, television channels reported.

Video footage showed a bomb disposal squad examining a car near the farmhouse on the edge of the capital Islamabad where the former army chief was detained last week over allegations he had overstepped his powers while in office.

There was no immediate word from police on who they suspected might have planted the explosives.

Pakistan's Taliban movement have threatened to kill Musharraf, who returned from almost four years of self-imposed exile last month in the hope of relaunching his political career at general elections on May 11.

Instead, election officials disqualified him from running and judges ordered he be placed under house arrest to face a hearing next month over allegations he unlawfully ordered the detention of judges in 2007 when he was still in office.

This 8-Bit Video Will Make You Miss Your Childhood in the 90's

It's every generation's responsibility to grow old and become cranky at the next generation while talking about how growing up back then was so much more fun than growing up today. THESE KIDS KNOW NOTHING. All they do is stare at iPads and play crappy games by swiping on giant phones.
