Brisbane Heat v Sydney Sixers ? Big Bash League, 2012/13 ? Live Cricket Score and Match Update ? Sixers win by 5 wickets
An unbeaten half-ton from Michael Lumb propelled the Sydney Sixers to a 5-wicket win over the Brisbane Heat, in their Big Bash League match, played today on January 7 at the Gabba.
The match kicked off with Heat winning the toss and choosing to bat first, but the Sixers? Steve O?Keefe (4-0-21-3), Josh Hazlewood (4-0-32-3), Luke Feldman (4-0-26-2), and Brett Lee (4-0-29-1) all joined forces to ensure that the Heat were kept down to a low total.
The hosts appeared off to a poor start as they lost opener and skipper James Hopes on duck in the second over, off O?Keefe. However, Luke Pomersbach (37) and Joe Burns (27) stepped in to steady the team?s innings with a second-wicket partnership worth 48 runs.
Hazlewood broke it up in the 10th over with the dismissal of Burns, and Pomersbach followed him back to the pavilion in the very next over, undone by Feldman. Daniel Christian (2) and Chris Lynn (3) were unable to display any staying power at the crease, and were sent packing swiftly, by O?Keefe and Feldman respectively.
Heat remained mediocre with the bat, and while Ben Cutting (10), Peter Forrest (21), Chris Hartley (10), and Nathan Hauritz (16*) all managed to reach double digits, they were unable to contribute much, and the hosts eventually posted a final total of 127 for 9 by the end of 20 overs.
Cutting (3-0-9-2) and Christian (3-0-21-2), assisted by Alister McDermott (2-0-17-1), attempted a defence of their team total, but their efforts went in vain, and the target posed little to no trouble for the Sixers.
The chase was driven entirely by opening batsman Michael Lumb, who remained unbeaten on 61 and guided the team through until the end. Wicketkeeper skipper Brad Haddin (16), Nic Maddinson (17), and Moises Henriques (12) were the only other batsmen who managed to reach double figures, while the rest ? Steven Smith (9), Daniel Hughes (7), and Steve O?Keefe (1*) ? failed to contribute much.
However, their small contributions sufficed, and guided by Lumb?s half-century, the Sixers managed to reach 128 in the end, with 5 wickets still in hand, and 6 balls remaining.
