Liftport turns to Kickstarter for space elevator experiment (video)

Space elevators are slowly making the transition from science fiction to science fact... but we're not quite there yet. LiftPort, a group that already holds the record for tallest elevator, is taking a second stab at the technology after going into "hibernation" in 2007. Founder Michael Laine has resurrected the company and taken to Kickstarter to drum up interest (as well as a little cash) in his latest project -- a lunar elevator. As Laine explains in the video, an elevator from the surface of the Moon to a rendezvous point between the Earth and its satellite is actually possible using current technology. And, thanks to its low gravity and lack of atmosphere, a much simpler construction site. The first step is a $1 million feasibility study that will involve a two kilometer tall elevator here on Earth. LiftPort has already far exceeded its Kickstarter goal of $8,000, but the point was never to fund the entire project. The hope was to garner some media attention and get people involved and invested (both financially and emotionally) by offering rewards. You could even pledge enough money to base jump from the top of the tethered research tower, which will be held aloft by helium balloons. United suffers computer issues, delays widespread

United Airlines passengers faced delays and long lines after some of its major computer systems and its website failed Tuesday.

The glitch was another in a long string of technology problems that began when United merged computer systems with Continental's in March.

United acknowledged at least 200 delayed flights. Its passenger reservation system and website stopped working for about two-and-a-half hours on Tuesday afternoon, although the precise cause wasn't known.

The outage didn't affect planes in flight.

Passengers in several United hubs reported very long lines at ticket counters. During the outage it stopped sending planes to its hubs in Newark, N.J., and San Francisco.

Alex Belo was waiting at Newark to get on a flight to Mexico City. He considered himself lucky to be behind only 100 or so people waiting to check a bag ? because there were another 300 to 400 behind him.

"The line is not moving, or very slowly moving. And they're giving priority only to first class," he said.

United said it will not charge the usual change fees for passengers on affected flights who want to cancel or rebook their tickets. It apologized for the disruption.

Simon Duvall spent two hours sitting on his flight waiting for the computer problems to be resolved. People were calm but not happy, he said.

"We're on a plane, on the tarmac in Las Vegas in the middle of August. It's warm. It's uncomfortable. It's cramped," he said.

United Continental Holdings Inc. has been struggling with computer issues off and on since March, when it switched to using Continental's system for tracking passenger information. The two airlines merged in 2010.

Airlines rely on software to know who is filling the seats on its planes, and how many empty seats are available. Those computer systems make it possible to print boarding passes, too.

Rich Pearson, head of marketing at professional freelance site Elance, was stuck in Houston on his way to present at a jobs seminar at the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla.

Planes were lined up on the tarmac. "It's almost like horseback riding when they are all nose-to-butt," Pearson said. "It's like we've gone back 50 years."

"People are relatively calm," he added. "The customer service area was initially flooded. But they can't really do anything."

LONDON (AP) ? So, were the locals lying about the lion?

Police said Monday that they've found no evidence to support area residents' claims that they'd spotted a big cat prowling the countryside near the idyllic village of St. Osyth, in the southeastern English county of Essex.

Sunday's reported sightings alarmed many of the village's 4,000 people, and authorities sent about 40 officers, tranquilizer-toting zoo experts, and a pair of heat-seeking helicopters to the area in an effort to find the beast.

But a police spokeswoman said that, after an extensive search, "we've found no evidence" of a lion. The creature spotted Sunday night may have been a large domestic cat or a wildcat, she added.

So does that mean there never was any lion?

The official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity, demurred, noting that the people interviewed by police were convinced they'd spotted a lion. That aside, she said, "we've stopped searching for it."

It seems the mysterious "Essex Lion" will join a number of other mythical beasts that at times appear and then disappear into Britain's forests and seaside ? particularly in the dead of summer, when journalists struggle to fill papers and news bulletins.

In 2011, there was the Hampshire White Tiger, whose alleged appearance near a sports field stopped a cricket game and led to a police alert (the tiger turned out to be a stuffed toy). And in 2007, the British media went wild over a man who claimed to have photographed a great white shark off the coast of Cornwall, in southwestern England.

The man, a bouncer, later admitted that the pictures were actually taken while on vacation in South Africa, adding that he couldn't believe anyone had been foolish enough to take the hoax seriously.

Hundreds join anti-nuclear rally in Tokyo

Hundreds of anti-nuclear demonstrators marched in Tokyo Sunday, calling for Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to abandon the country's atomic energy programme following last year's Fukushima accident.

Approximately 500 protesters, including mothers with their children and young men banging drums, walked through the capital's popular Shibuya shopping district.

"This is part of the movement that has backed up the rallies outside the prime minister's office every Friday," one of the participants said.

In recent months about a thousand people have protested every Friday outside the prime minister's office in Tokyo, in an attempt to put pressure on Noda to ditch Japan's nuclear energy programme.

Last week the PM met face-to-face with anti-nuclear demonstrators for the first time.

Representatives of the movement asked Noda to reverse his decision to restart two reactors and urged him to abandon nuclear power altogether.

Noda declined to switch off the two reactors that were restarted this summer amid looming power shortages.

He repeated his government's plans to adopt a new energy policy to reduce the country's dependence on atomic power, which once accounted for one-third of its supply.

Japan turned off its stable 50 reactors in the wake of the 9.0 magnitude quake on March 2011, which set off a massive tsunami that swamped the Fukushima Daiichi plant, sending reactors into meltdown.

Radiation was spread over a large area in the worst nuclear accident in a generation.

Republican Convention's Big Squeeze: Planners Trim Schedule to Three Days

TAMPA, Fla. - Republican officials are getting a lesson in how to squeeze a national convention into just three days.

In a conference call with reporters today, Romney campaign strategist Russ Schriefer said that Tropical Storm Isaac - soon to be Hurricane Isaac - had forced Republican National Convention planners to eliminate "some parts of the program that weren't essential in order to retain our headliners."

Schriefer said that none of the "headliners" - those speakers who were scheduled for the prime 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. time slot - had been removed from the program, but other speakers had.

"We did not change the 10 to 11 p.m. hour on any night," Schriefer said.

According to the revised schedule released by convention officials, the roll call vote officially nominating Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to the Republican ticket will take place on Tuesday. That night Ann Romney will speak. Ryan's speech takes place on Tuesday and Romney's on Thursday.

The trimming of the schedule to accommodate the party's three-day time frame included cutting out some parts of the program entirely and "making a few of the speeches shorter," Schriefer said.

And the RNC built in an additional half-hour of time by pushing up the start of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights to 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.

"We're obviously monitoring what is going on with the weather," Schriefer said.

Tropical Storm Isaac will be making its way up the Florida coast tonight, bringing with it potentially damaging rain and wind. It is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as early as Monday morning, and then make landfall somewhere along the Gulf Coast on Tuesday.

He left open the possibility that "if the weather changes," further alterations to the schedule might be made, though none were planned at this time. And Schriefer declined to speculate about potentially extending the convention programming through Friday.

"It's a hypothetical question and I really don't want to kind of answer it in that way," he said.

Monday's session will be brief. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus plans to gavel in the convention and then immediately call it into recess until Tuesday.

"If the session lasts more than five minutes I would be surprised," Schriefer said, noting that although delegates are invited to attend he did not anticipate many would show up.

In an interview with "Fox News Sunday," Priebus emphasized that "the show is going to go on.

"We're going to get the business done at the RNC," the chairman said. "We're going to nominate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. We're going to have a great time in Tampa."

MILAN (AP) ? French fashion designer Pierre Cardin has designed a gift meant as an economic catalyst to Venice and the region: a 250-meter (800-foot)-tall modernist glass skyscraper housing a fashion university, luxury hotel suites and shops.

But rather than unbridled enthusiasm, the proposed ?2.4-billion ($3 billion) project has been met with everything from healthy skepticism to open ridicule.

The "Palace of Light" has been described alternatively as a spaceship that crashed into the lagoon, a shiny fishing lure or an illuminated mushroom.

"It is seen with interest, but at the same time with open perplexity," said Claudio Borghello, a Venice city councilman. "There is not a skyscraper of this dimension in all of (the) Veneto (region), forget right on the lagoon." At the same time, "this could become a symbol that you can relaunch this part of the world."

Cardin, who turned 90 in July, designed his "Palais Lumiere" as a gift to his native Veneto, the region that includes Venice. While Cardin epitomizes French style, he is actually Italian-born: Pietro Cardin, trundled off from San Biagio di Callalta, north of Venice, by his parents to France at age 2.

Three interconnecting towers would be built at the industrial port of Marghera, an area in economic decline some 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Venice's landmark St. Mark's Square. Under the proposal, Cardin would clean up pollutants from the land, invest ?1.4 billion ($1.75 billion) himself and endow the fashion university, said Cardin's nephew, Rodrigo Basilicati, who has been pushing the project through the bureaucracy.

Plans envision 2,500 to 3,000 jobs on site created during construction, and another 2,000 to 2,500 after completion.

While welcoming the prospects of an environmental cleanup and new jobs, critics are concerned about overall impact on the fragile lagoon environment and a city already overwhelmed by mass tourism ? as well as visual pollution from the tower itself, which some complain has no relationship with the city's Byzantine architecture.

Architect Vittorio Gregotti urged Cardin: "If you want to do something for Venice, do something else." Italia Nostra, a preservation group, said the skyscraper, at three times the height of St. Mark's "would squash the city's proportions," and referred to the structure itself as a "giant illuminated mushroom."

To help persuade Venetians that the criticism is overstated, Cardin is opening an exhibit on the project in Marghera on Monday on the sidelines of the Venice Biennale of architecture, which opens Wednesday.

Basilicati said his uncle knew the project would be "a provocation." But the stylist wasn't quite ready for the intensity of the criticism.

"Let's say the reaction to the aesthetics he understands, even if it doesn't make him happy," Basilicati said. "On the other hand, the objections about the skyline and the environmental impact have disappointed him, using lies."

The towers, he insists, won't be visible at all from Venice's historic center, and only barely seen from the Lido island.

Italy's air traffic authority is expected to say within days if the tower's height interferes with local air traffic. After that, a committee of local authorities will convene in an effort to streamline final approvals, which could pave the way for construction to begin early next year.

"In an industrial zone like Port Marghera, which is not protected by UNESCO, I think this is only an improvement," Basilicati said

The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:54 UTC.

Egypt reopens Rafah crossing with Gaza: sources

ISMAILIA, EGYPT/GAZA (Reuters) - Egypt reopened the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Saturday, a lifeline for Gazans which had been closed for much of the month since an August 5 attack on Egyptian guards, Palestinian and Egyptian security sources said.

The move signals an advance in relations between Egypt's new government lead by President Mohammed Mursi and Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas, which had deteriorated since the attack in which gunmen killed 16 Egyptian soldiers on the Israeli border.

"The Egyptian side has informed us that the Rafah crossing would open all days of the week, without more details," said Ehab Al-Ghsain, spokesman for the interior ministry in Gaza.

The opening of the crossing was confirmed by an Egyptian security source.

Shortly after the attack, Egypt closed the Rafah crossing and moved to seal myriad smuggling tunnels with Gaza on suspicion they might have been used by militants who shot dead the soldiers before storming an Israeli border crossing near Gaza. The attackers were killed by Israeli fire.

The Rafah crossing normally sees some 800 people a day leave for Egypt and beyond, and is the only window on the world for the vast majority of Gazans.

Egypt later said it would open the crossing temporarily, but just for three days, mainly to permit travel for humanitarian purposes such as Palestinians seeking medical care abroad.

Hamas has ruled out suggestions that Palestinian gunmen took part in the Sinai killings and has criticised Cairo for imposing "collective punishment" on the impoverished Mediterranean coastal enclave by sealing the border.

Hamas hoped the election of the Muslim Brotherhood's Mursi would usher in an era of strong ties between Gaza and Cairo, but that has yet to materialise because of strategic considerations involving Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel and related military aid from the United States.

I don't have an official diagnosis, but after, well, lots of reading and writing, and questioning... I'm quite sure I share of a lot of traits... When I started reading about this, I read about meltdowns and thought I didn't have them... But oh! wait! I've realized I do have meltdowns. I call them migraines. Had them all my life. I get in a sonophobic, photophobic, any stimuli phobic state, that state preceding the pain, sometimes there is no pain... Happens quite often. I gobble ibuprofen as if it were candy. Should buy the company. But there was a period in my life when I went on for a long time having very few of them... I was working out an hour a day, really hard, keeping my pulse over 150 all that time... So, I'm thinking, maybe "aspie machinery" needs to be more finely tuned than most... Or maybe it's just the endorphins doing their job (best drug ever). What do you think? But they do seem related, I sometimes get migraines as a result of meltdowns, or any other kind of stress, and my migraines can sometimes be triggered by sensory triggers like bright light or color patterns. But usually there's some other stressor at work as well as the sensory issue, such as a strange situation, fatigue, hunger, and so forth. Maybe it has to do with holding a meltdown at bay, as that can take a lot of effort, is internalizing the feelings, and it does seem that could result in a migraine. So yeah, maybe. (I'm also self-diagnosed btw.) Exercise stimulates endorphins and helps people's stress levels stay more even. It could reduce sensory issues, I suppose. Hadn't really thought about it. It also regulates blood pressure, which can be a part of what makes a migraine happen. So maybe you have something there.

I am prone to depression and have used antidepressants before, but I feel like I am in a stable emotional place with regular exercise even without medication. I would be a mess without it.
