So, I thought I?d share some of my Lenten craft ideas and practices? maybe you?ll get inspired. Most of these are Random Acts of Creative Kindness-(RAKs or RACKs)? just little things I make and send out to the unsuspecting. My hope is that the unexpected act of beauty will brighten someones day!

Random Acts of Creative Kindness:

Create little notes to slip to your kids, spouse, parents, friends. Tell them that they are beautiful, special, LOVED. Yes, you say it, but having it in writing is special. (See my post about Camp Cards to see what I mean.)
Make up a batch of cookies or candies, add a little tag that says, ?Because you?re sweet? and pass them out to crossing guards, lunch ladies, school custodians, bus drivers, postal workers, what ever?you know, those folks to improve our quality of life but we don?t usually take the time to say thank you.
Are you a cardmaker? Make cards to give away. Nursing homes and after-school programs regularly need cards for residents/participants to give to loved ones for special occasions.
Knitter? Make a hat. Or two. Or twelve. Somewhere near you, a chemo unit or a NICU (neo-natal) unit needs caps to keep those heads warm.
And in that vein?. use up your odds-and-ends of yarn to make striped scarves. Donate them to a men?s shelter, homeless shelter, group home, or even your closest school.
Are you blessed with abundance? Donate supplies. Nursing homes, hospitals, daycares (if the products are non-toxic) and even art therapists need art/craft supplies to make the lives of their clients richer. I bet you have something to spare.
Use up your fabric stash making lap quilts and baby quilts. Seniors in wheelchairs love pockets in theirs, too.
Make jewelry? Make 10 pairs of earrings, and sell them to your friends, family, co-workers for $10 each. Donate the proceeds to the charity of your choice.
Each one teach one. Share your skill! Teach someone to knit, crochet, embroider, sew a straight line, or master a wrapped loop. Trust me, someone out there would benefit greatly from the skills you take for granted. And moreover, someone would love the kind, nurturing attention that instruction brings.

Shrewsbury based artist, Steve Davenport, will be showcasing his collection of work, which features images of iconic musicians and film stars such as Jimi Hendrix, Paul Weller and Marilyn Monroe, at the Market Hall gallery until March 3.

Lawyers for Rahmatullah and the legal rights group Reprieve contended that international law required Britain to be responsible for his care since British forces in Iraq originally seized him in 2004. He was turned over to U.S. custody and transferred to the detention facility at Bagram air base in Afghanistan.

"This is far from over," said Clair Algar, Reprieve's executive director.

"The British government's failure to persuade its supposedly closest ally to honor agreements signed between the two countries has left it open to war crimes charges. The government now faces yet another investigation over its involvement in torture and rendition," Algar said.

On Saturday ? the deadline for complying with the habeas corpus writ ? Reprieve lodged a formal complaint with London's Metropolitan police accusing the government of a role in war crimes against Rahmatullah and a man arrested with him, Amanatullah Ali.

"Unlike some crimes, this is an ongoing one. These men continue to be held in breach of the Geneva Conventions, with no one having been held accountable for the crimes committed against them," Reprieve's director, Clive Stafford Smith, said in the complaint.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Calling quits to a bruising election-year fight, negotiators on Capitol Hill sealed an agreement late Wednesday on legislation to renew a payroll tax cut for 160 million workers and jobless benefits for millions more.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., announced the agreement, capping a long day of wrangling over final details of the measure, which is a top priority of President Barack Obama. The announcement paved the way for votes in both House and Senate this week.

The $150 billion measure represents a tactical retreat for Republicans, who were generally unenthusiastic about the legislation but eager to move beyond the issue. With the campaign season starting, they don't want Obama and Democrats in Congress to be able to claim that the GOP was standing in the way of a middle-class tax cut.

It represented a rare burst of bipartisanship in a bitterly divided Congress.

The legislation would continue a 2 percentage-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax, renew jobless benefits averaging about $300 a week for people languishing for long periods on unemployment rolls and protect doctors from a huge cut in their Medicare reimbursements.

The measure carries a price tag of roughly $150 billion over the coming year, partly financed by new auctions of telecommunications spectrum to wireless companies and by requiring newly-hired federal workers to contribute more toward their pensions. The pension provision was watered down from a version sought by House Republicans, and tentatively agreed to by key Democrats, that would have required current federal workers to contribute more to their defined benefit pensions.

Auctions of portions of the nation's airwaves to wireless companies would net another $15 billion or so ? even after $7 billion is set aside to construct and run a new public safety network for emergency first responders.

Extending the payroll tax cut and renewing long-term jobless benefits were key planks in Obama's jobs program, which was announced last September but has been largely ignored since. The measures are intended to help the economy by giving people more money to spend, fattening a typical bimonthly paycheck by $40 or so and giving the unemployed critical cash that most of them turn around and spend immediately.

The measure also includes a key adjustment to the badly broken Medicare payment formula for doctors, which would otherwise impose a 27 percent cut on March 1 under a 1997 budget law. The $20 billion cost would be covered in part by cuts to a fund created under Obama's health care law that awards grants for preventive care and by curbs on Medicaid payments to hospitals that care for a disproportionate share of uninsured patients.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said the legislation would probably be voted on by the end of the week. GOP leaders had jump-started the talks over the weekend by dropping a demand that the tax cut be paid for with spending cuts. On Monday, Republicans upped the ante by threatening to advance the payroll tax cut on its own ? and leave jobless benefits and the Medicare fix behind, which set off alarms with Democratic lawmakers and at the White House.

"We were not going to allow the Democrats to continue to play political games and raise taxes on working Americans," Boehner told reporters. "We made the decision to bring them to the table so that the games would stop and we would get this work done."

Some rank-and-file Republicans continued to grumble that the measure was flawed and that the payroll tax cut, first enacted in December of 2010, has done little to prop up the economy. But the prevailing instinct among Republicans was political survival and not wanting to look like they were getting in the way of an election-year tax cut.

"Not going to do this again, but if it gets us through the year, gets this issue off the table, it's worth doing this way," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

The final snag, aides said, had involved a spat over new auctions of wireless spectrum, a key provision required to help defray the $30 billion cost of extending jobless benefits. House Republicans moved in the Democrats' direction on the amount of money dedicated to creating the public safety communications network for first responders.

Republicans claimed victory in reducing the number of weeks of jobless benefits that workers would be eligible to receive. The maximum number in states with the highest jobless rates would be cut from 99 weeks to 73 weeks by the end of the year, according to aides in both parties. Republicans had wanted to cut the maximum to 59 weeks.

But in states with particularly high unemployment, such as Rhode Island and Nevada, the measure is actually more generous over the next few months than current law.

Negotiators also dropped House-passed language that would have forced low-income people to have Social Security numbers in order to get government checks by claiming the children's tax credit, a move that was aimed at illegal immigrants and caused a furor among many Hispanics.

Republicans also dropped a proposal requiring unemployed people to seek high school equivalency degrees to obtain benefits. But a GOP provision requiring jobless people to be more diligent in job searches as a condition of receiving benefits was included.

The measure also would prevent welfare recipients from using their electronic benefits cards to withdraw money at ATMs in strip clubs, casinos and liquor stores.

LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) -Zambians poured out of their houses, clubs and bars to celebrate in the streets early Monday after watching their team beat Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties in the African Cup finals.

It was a bittersweet victory in Libreville, Gabon. Last week after arriving for the finals, Zambia's current players laid flowers on a stretch of sand in Libreville not far from where a Zambian military plane crashed into the ocean soon after takeoff in 1993, killing 25 players and officials on board as well as a state news agency sports reporter and the military transport plane's crew.

Back in 1993, state broadcasters interrupted normal programming to announce the crash in the eight languages spoken here. In Lusaka, the capital, men and women wept in offices and on the streets.

Monday, there were cheers.

"It is a dream come true," said David Phiri, a plumber. Then he blew hard on his vuvuzela, the piercing trumpet heard around the world during broadcasts from the World Cup in neighboring South Africa in 2010.

Jubilant Zambians also honked the horns of cars draped in their flag, shouted from windows, and sang football songs.

"It was written in the stars that we will be the champions," Winfreda Muyunda said breathlessly as she ran out to join a street party that had converged in front of a Lusaka police station. Some women were in their night gowns covered by traditional cotton wrappers known as chitenge, while most men and boys were shirtless.

The spontaneous street parties after the nerve-racking win were in defiance of police minister Kennedy Sakeni, who had said there would be no reason for people to leave their homes to celebrate. Many workers are hoping the government will declare a public holiday in coming days.

In the lead-up to the finals, Zambians at home and abroad rejected predictions Ivory Coast was too strong for their Chipolopolo. Fans have been partying and blowing their vuvuzelas. Traders have done roaring business in shirts, scarves, caps and chitenge in national colors, as well as national flags.

President Michael Sata gave Vice President Guy Scott the honor of representing his government at the finals.
