Five tips to become a supplement-savvy athlete | Human Kinetics ...

Sport SupplementsAlthough dietary supplement use is widespread among athletes, many of them are not using supplements correctly.

According to research, as many as 90 percent of US college athletes use some type of sport supplement, while surveys taken at the Olympic Games revealed 69 percent of athletes in Atlanta and 74 percent in Sydney used them.

According to Kimberly Mueller, a sports dietitian and top expert on supplements, even though exercise may not be a problem for most athletes, a perception remains that dietary supplementation can help offset the consequences of a diet rich in nutritionally empty foods.

?Dietary supplements are often perceived as sticking plaster for poor lifestyle choices, including imbalanced nutrition, lack of exercise and deficient sleep patterns,? Mueller says.

With a growing number of athletes using dietary supplements, many sport governing bodies are laying down ground rules to minimise health and safety risks to athletes.

Although it has been suggested that athletes should avoid dietary supplements altogether, Mueller says this approach is unrealistic and unnecessary. ?There are a variety of legitimate reasons for an athlete to use supplements in coordination with a well-balanced diet,? she explains.

In her forthcoming book, The Athlete?s Guide to Sports Supplements, Mueller offers five tips that all athletes should follow when taking a supplement.

1. Talk with your healthcare provider before making a decision.
?A trip to the gym may lead to a sales pitch for a variety of supplements,? says Mueller. ?Many fitness professionals are pressured to meet a specific sales quota for a supplement line the gym is carrying or are merely looking for additional income.? According to Mueller, athletes must be selective about where and from whom they are gathering information. She encourages athletes to speak with a healthcare provider, such as a doctor or pharmacist, about dietary supplements before taking anything at all. Health care providers can discuss the potential benefits as well as safety risks.

2. Become familiar with reputable online resources for supplements. ?A single online search of dietary supplements will lead to a plethora of information, often conflicting and usually generated by unqualified parties,? says Mueller. In her book, she provides a quick reference guide of credible websites for information on important issues involving dietary supplements.

3. Look for clean supplements. ?Unfortunately, a legitimate risk to an athlete is a failed doping test due to use of contaminated nutritional supplements, despite ongoing efforts to improve relatively ineffective or nonexistent regulatory and manufacturing guidelines,? Mueller says. ?Several reviews of supplements available from the Internet and retail stores have confirmed that many supplements are laced with steroids and stimulants, which are prohibited for use in sports.? Thus, any athlete thinking about using a dietary supplement should make sure that there has been a stamp of approval garnered from an independent testing lab. Independent testing via third-party organizations ensures that the contents of dietary supplements actually match what is printed on the label, there are no ingredients present in the supplement that are not openly disclosed on the label, and there are no unacceptable levels of contaminants present in the supplement.

4. Learn how to read supplement labels. The dietary supplement label lists essential information about the product in the bottle. ?Prior to using any supplement, it is critical to always read the label and follow directions for use,? Mueller advises.

5. Know how to report fraudulent supplements or adverse reactions. Any athlete who experiences an adverse reaction to a dietary supplement should immediately contact his or her health care provider, after which the problem can be reported directly to the FDA.

?It?s impossible to ignore the prevalence of dietary supplement use in athletics,? Mueller concludes. ?Thus, it?s important for athletes, coaches, and sport performance professionals to be educated on how supplements are regulated and what to look for in a dietary supplement.?

The Athlete?s Guide to Sports Supplements, available August 2013, covers 120 of the most popular supplements and gives readers the tools they need to assess, evaluate, and purchase supplements that fit their specific muscular, cardiovascular and psychological needs.

Bush-Palin ticket called 'GOP's only chance'

(WASHINGTON TIMES) Earlier this year, Jeb Bush told ABC that both his father George H.W. Bush, and brother George W. recommended he run for president in 2016. Mama Barbara Bush is not keen on the idea, declaring in April that ?the nation?s probably had enough Bushes.?

But in the constantly shifting equations of potential Republican hopefuls for future president and vice president, the former Florida governor?s name has been tied with another former governor: Sarah Palin.

The pair have now been framed as a ?the GOP?s only chance? in the race by American Thinker contributor Michael Sheppard.

From Nature magazine

Doris Taylor doesn't take it as an insult when people call her Dr Frankenstein. ?It was actually one of the bigger compliments I've gotten,? she says ? an affirmation that her research is pushing the boundaries of the possible. Given the nature of her work as director of regenerative medicine research at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Taylor has to admit that the comparison is apt. She regularly harvests organs such as hearts and lungs from the newly dead, re-engineers them starting from the cells and attempts to bring them back to life in the hope that they might beat or breathe again in the living.

Taylor is in the vanguard of researchers looking to engineer entire new organs, to enable transplants without the risk of rejection by the recipient's immune system. The strategy is simple enough in principle. First remove all the cells from a dead organ ? it does not even have to be from a human ? then take the protein scaffold left behind and repopulate it with stem cells immunologically matched to the patient in need. Voil?! The crippling shortage of transplantable organs around the world is solved.

In practice, however, the process is beset with tremendous challenges. Researchers have had some success with growing and transplanting hollow, relatively simple organs such as tracheas and bladders (see go.nature.com/zvuxed). But growing solid organs such as kidneys or lungs means getting dozens of cell types into exactly the right positions, and simultaneously growing complete networks of blood vessels to keep them alive. The new organs must be sterile, able to grow if the patient is young, and at least nominally able to repair themselves. Most importantly, they have to work ? ideally, for a lifetime. The heart is the third most needed organ after the kidney and the liver, with a waiting list of about 3,500 in the United States alone, but it poses extra challenges for transplantation and bioengineering. The heart must beat constantly to pump some 7,000 litres of blood per day without a back-up. It has chambers and valves constructed from several different types of specialized muscle cells called cardiomyocytes. And donor hearts are rare, because they are often damaged by disease or resuscitation efforts, so a steady supply of bioengineered organs would be welcome.

Taylor, who led some of the first successful experiments to build rat hearts, is optimistic about this ultimate challenge in tissue engineering. ?I think it's eminently doable,? she says, quickly adding, ?I don't think it's simple.? Some colleagues are less optimistic. Paolo Macchiarini, a thoracic surgeon and scientist at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, who has transplanted bioengineered tracheas into several patients, says that although tissue engineering could become routine for replacing tubular structures such as windpipes, arteries and oesophagi, he is ?not confident that this will happen with more complex organs?.

Yet the effort may be worthwhile even if it fails, says Alejandro Soto-Guti?rrez, a researcher and surgeon at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. ?Besides the dream of making organs for transplantation, there are a lot of things we can learn from these systems,? he says ? including a better basic understanding of cell organization in the heart and new ideas about how to fix one.

Former chief of Fukushima nuclear plant has died

TOKYO (AP) ? Masao Yoshida, the man who led the life-risking battle at Japan's crippled nuclear power plant when it was spiraling into meltdowns, died Tuesday of cancer of the esophagus. He was 58.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Yoshimi Hitosugi said Yoshida died at a Tokyo hospital. TEPCO officials said his illness was not related to radiation exposure.

Yoshida led efforts to stabilize the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant after the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami knocked out its power and cooling systems, causing triple meltdowns and massive radiation leaks.

Recalling the first few days when the three reactors suffered meltdowns in succession, Yoshida later said: "There were several instances when I thought we were all going to die here. I feared the plant was getting out of control and we would be finished."

Yoshida was an outspoken, tall man with a loud voice who wasn't afraid of talking back to higher-ups and was known to his workers as a caring figure. Even then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who was extremely frustrated by TEPCO's initial lack of information and slow handling, said after meeting him that Yoshida could be trusted.

On March 12, after Unit 1 reactor building exploded following a meltdown, Yoshida kept pumping in sea water into the reactor to cool it, ignoring an order from the TEPCO headquarters to stop doing so as Kan feared a possibility of sea water triggering a fission chain reaction. Yoshida was initially reprimanded for disobeying the order from above, but later praised for his judgment that eventually helped keep the reactor from turning worse.

"I bow deeply in respect to his leadership and decisiveness," Kan said in his Twitter entry Tuesday.

Kunio Yanagida, former member of a government-commissioned accident probe panel who interviewed Yoshida for 10 hours, said his death is a major loss for future investigations into the disaster at the plant, which hasn't been fully examined due to high levels of radiation.

Yoshida studied nuclear engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and joined TEPCO in 1979. He worked in the company's nuclear department before landing a top job at the Fukushima Dai-ichi a year before the crisis.

Yoshida stepped down as plant chief in December 2011, citing the cancer, after workers had begun to bring the plant under control.

Yoshida had brought workers together and kept their spirits up to survive the crisis, and had expressed hopes of returning to work for Fukushima's recovery even after falling ill, TEPCO President Naomi Hirose said.

"He literally put his life at risk in dealing with the accident," Hirose said in a statement. "We keep his wishes to our heart and do utmost for the reconstruction of Fukushima, which he tried to save at all cost."

Elevate Your Level Of Happiness With These Self Help Ideas | Float ...

Monday, July 8th, 2013 at 11:21 pm ?

TIP! Personal development requires many tough choices. Even if you don?t have all the information you would like, don?t be scared to make decisions.

Putting a self-help plan into action can turn your life around very quickly. This can help you think on where to start in making great changes when it comes to your life. The following tips will be all the help you need to help yourself construct a self improvement plan.

TIP! Place your personal central principles into practice. Everyone has certain beliefs that reinforce their sense of self at the core.

Hang out with people who are similar to you. This helps strengthen your resolve, reinforces positive thinking and keeps you away from toxic people that harm your dreams and goals.

Personal Development

TIP! Create a personal development plan that is centered around personal beliefs that you have identified. It wouldn?t make sense to work on areas in your life that contradict your values.

Find self improvement books that are appropriate for your age and situation. Well written books on personal development will always spark new ideas and give suggestions on altering your life. Make sure you select a book which has a few good reviews because some books in the personal development genre can be very badly written.

TIP! One way to raise your self-esteem is to give other people compliments. Being nice to others will help you learn to be nicer to yourself.

Have a clear understanding of the obstacles between you and your success. This seems to be hard from some people. However, when you can find out what your weaknesses are, this becomes the first step in dealing with them and, eventually, changing them. When you take each area and take action to improve it, the path to a better future is much smoother.

TIP! You need to care for yourself before you can care for others. Always give yourself a chance to renew your energy and restore your mind.

Maximize your time for personal development to help you get more done. One effective way to work more efficiently is to schedule more regular break times. It might seem odd, but regular breaks will let you relax and get more energy. Once you get started working again, you will be more productive.

Core Principles

TIP! Do you feel like you drink too much alcohol? Are you addicted to smoking cigarettes, or partake in other activities that can hurt your body? Your body is sacred, and you have to learn to respect it. Eliminating bad habits can be a very essential part of improving your life.

Put your core principles into practice. Your individual core beliefs are what support your sense of self. Having a good foundation based on your core principles will benefit your sense of self esteem. If you do this you will encourage you to be consistent, it is an great trait to have.

TIP! Whatever you need, and whatever you decide to do about it, you must at least do one thing. You need to participate in life and not watch from the sidelines.

If you hope to advance your state of knowledge regarding personal development, it can help to show a little humility. If you admit that you are simply a tiny part of this world, you will begin to recognize how much you still have to learn. As soon as you have this idea lodged in your brain, you are going to want to understand and be able to learn different things, which leads to improving yourself.

TIP! Try to rid of your life of disorganization. Being organized can make you feel accomplished and it can boost your confidence.

There other uses for exercise besides weight loss. There are a variety of great reasons to exercise. For one thing, exercise stimulates your brain to produce chemicals that improve your mood.

TIP! Demonstrate altruism to improve your life. Knowing what it means to care for and help others, by making the sacrifices within yourself, can greatly benefit your inner character.

Instead of bragging about how many things you?ve earned in your life, try to ask other people about what they?ve earned in their life and what they?re proud of. This will enable you to learn about others and to develop a great deal of respect for the people around you.

TIP! Nothing is more important to your personal development than working on health issues. When they are in good healthy they will feel great.

Therapy is a good way to work through serious issues. Books can be very helpful to help you understand your problems, but they tend to lack the insight and knowledge which a therapist can give you. Talking can be the motivation that some need in order to be successful. Books can?t talk back like a trained professional, after all.

TIP! You need a good attitude for personal development. Having a negative attitude will only hold you back and keep you from success.

In order to help with depression, try to add extra complex carbohydrates to your diet. If you are not getting enough complex carbs, you serotonin levels will be low. Eat more fresh fruit, raw vegetables, whole grains, beans, brown rice and nuts to improve your complex carbohydrate intake.

TIP! Having written goals can help you experience more personal growth. If you are trying to become more confident, write that down.

You can learn to control your emotions in a stressful situation. Come up with methods that will help relieve your stress and remain calm when problems pop up. Make the time to stop and breathe.

TIP! Eliminate all unnecessary stress from your life. Taking things too seriously in times of trouble results in extra, unnecessary stress.

Understand what you want from your life. Following through is the next step. If you sit in your chair thinking about how you would like your life to be, and you do nothing to make it happen, you will never get that life. You must take steps, one by one, to start making your dreams your reality.

TIP! You can?t change unless you make a directed, continuous effort to do so. Growth and improvement do not happen until you willingly embrace these changes.

While self-help does need research and effort, the benefits are more than worth it. Plus, you need to stick with your plans and have a lot of perseverance if you want to continue seeing the results roll in. You will find a great sense of accomplishment if you follow some of the wonderful tips above.
