GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) ? Attorneys are expected to lay out their case in the trial of a Kansas man accused of killing a 14-year-old girl and burning her body at the asphalt plant where he worked.
Opening statements are set Thursday in the trial of Adam Longoria, 38. The Great Bend man faces life in prison without parole if convicted of capital murder in the August 2010 death of Alicia DeBolt. He also is charged with vehicle burglary and theft related to the crime.
To convict him of capital murder, prosecutors must also prove the August 2010 killing of Alicia was done during the commission of aggravating circumstances such as sodomy or attempted rape. The state is not seeking the death penalty.
Prosecutors have portrayed Longoria as obsessed with the Great Bend cheerleader.
Defense attorneys have not talked about their defense strategy but suggested during jury selection that jurors must also be able to consider a lesser charge in the death that would not carry a sentence of mandatory life imprisonment without parole. The defense also has the option of delaying its opening statement until the start of the defense case later in the trial.
Prosecutors claim Longoria lured the teen into his vehicle after texting her about a party on the weekend before she would have started her freshman year of high school. Her family reported her missing the next day, setting off a search that ended three days later when her charred body ? with traces of duct tape on her ankles and face ? was found at an asphalt plant just south of Great Bend.
The community was so shaken by the missing girl's death that more than 2,000 people attended a vigil to remember the teen known as "Babygurl."
Jury selection edged closer to completion Wednesday with 44 jurors accepted into the pool after three days of questioning. A panel of 12 jurors and two alternates will be finalized Thursday once attorneys use their rights to dismiss some jury candidates without having to offer a reason.
Testimony in the case is anticipated to stretch into next week. As many as 170 potential state witnesses have been listed, although prosecutors have said they plan to call far fewer than that those to the stand.
Potential jurors were warned during questioning to expect gruesome crime scene photos to be projected onto a screen in the courtroom.

A paper by neuroscientists at the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College suggests that ingestion of components of afterbirth or placenta -- placentophagia -- may offer benefits to human mothers and perhaps to non-mothers and males.
They say this possibility does not warrant the wholesale ingestion of afterbirth, for some very good reasons, but that it deserves further study.
Mark Kristal, PhD, professor of psychology and neuroscience at UB, directs the graduate program in behavioral neuroscience, and has studied placentophagia for more than 40 years. He is recognized as a principle expert in the field.
Kristal's article "Placentophagia in Human and Nonhuman Mammals: Causes and Consequences," will be published in the March 30 issue of the journal Ecology of Food and Nutrition, which will be devoted to the subject of placentophagia.
Kristal's co-authors are Jean M. DiPirro, PhD, associate professor, Department of Psychology, Buffalo State College, and Alexis C. Thompson, PhD, research associate professor, UB Department of Psychology and a research scientist in the UB Research Institute on Addictions.
They point out that the benefits of placenta ingestion (as well as the ingestion of amniotic fluid) by non-human mammalian mothers are significant. It provokes an increase in mother-infant interaction, for instance, and increases the effects of pregnancy-mediated analgesia in the delivering mother. It also potentiates opioid circuits in the maternal brain that facilitate the onset of caretaking behavior, and suppresses postpartum pseudopregnancy, thereby increasing the possibilities for fertilization.
"Human childbirth is fraught with additional problems for which there are no practical nonhuman animal models," says Kristal, citing postpartum depression, failure to bond and maternal hostility toward the infant.
He says ingested afterbirth may contain components that ameliorate these problems, but although there have been many anecdotal claims made for human placentophagia, the issue has not been tested empirically.
"If such studies are undertaken," he says, "the results, if positive, will be medically relevant. If the results are negative, speculations and recommendations will persist, as it is not possible to prove the negative."
Kristal says there is a current fad of ingesting encapsulated placenta, which mirrors unverified reports in the 1960s and 1970s of people in back-to-nature communes cooking and eating human placentas. The upsurge in recent anecdotal reports of the benefits of taking placenta by new mothers, irrespective of dose, method of preparation, or time course, suggests more of a placebo effect than a medicinal effect.
"People will do anything," Kristal says, "but we shouldn't read too much significance into reports of such exceptions, even if they are accurate, because they are neither reliable nor valid studies. My own studies found no evidence of the routine practice of placentophagia in other cultures, findings supported by a recent extensive study by anthropologists at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
"The more challenging anthropological question is," he says, "'Why don't humans engage in placentophagia as a biological imperative as so many other mammals apparently do?' because we clearly do not do this as a matter of course today and apparently never have. Perhaps for humans, there is a greater adaptive advantage to not eating the placenta." The paper discusses some possibilities in this regard.
"Whether or not we learn why humans do not do this, it is important for us to search for the medicinal or behavioral benefits of components of afterbirth for the same reasons that we search for plant-based medicinal substances," Kristal says.
"The outcome of such a quest need not be an exhortation for women to eat afterbirth, but for scientists to isolate and identify the molecule or molecules that produce the beneficial effect and use it to design pharmacological tools," he says.
He adds, "In the case of Placental Opioid-Enhancing Factor or POEF and enhanced opioid-mediated analgesia, for instance, we have determined through earlier studies that not only is the effect nonspecific in regard to species, but it is also nonspecific in regard to sex.
"That means that although males, who in all probability do not make the molecule, have the ability to respond to it," Kristal says.
Kristal conducts research and publishes on opioid and hormonal mechanisms underlying periparturitional phenomena and the psychobiology of motivated behaviors. DiPirro's areas of research include psychostimulant-induced neural adaptations in neuropeptide neurotransmission in the forebrain and experience-induced adaptations in defensive and affiliative behaviors. Thompson's research includes studies of aspects of maternal behavior and behavioral regulation of pain and analgesia.

(Reuters) - Quebec's government said on Wednesday it was considering taking legal action against both Air Canada and the federal government to keep operations going at the Montreal facility that services the airline's planes.
The facility, once part of Air Canada's own maintenance unit, was operated by Aveos Fleet Performance Inc., a private company that obtained bankruptcy protection on Monday. It ceased Canadian operations and laid off most of its 2,600 Canadian employees on Tuesday. That included 1,700 workers in Montreal.
"We will do all, all, all we can to keep the operations open, to see how we can help the workers and the company," Quebec Premier Jean Charest told the province's legislature.
"We will examine all the options available, including the possibility of taking legal action against the federal government."
The federal law that has governed Air Canada's operations since its 1988 privatization requires it to "maintain operational and overhaul centers" in Montreal as well as in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Mississauga, Ontario.
In a statement, the opposition New Democratic Party said the Aveos shutdown breached that regulation.
Aveos has blamed much of its financial difficulty on Air Canada. It said the airline reduced the work it sent to Aveos, particularly in the last two months, precipitating a crisis.
Air Canada, Canada's biggest airline, countered on Tuesday, saying it had given Aveos financial and other assistance. It said it had identified "qualified and government approved" facilities in Canada and the United States to replace Aveos.
"The transition to new service providers is underway and will have no impact on customers," it said in a message to passengers posted on its website.
On Tuesday the airline said it would send three planes scheduled for maintenance this week to Premier Aviation, in Trois-Rivi?res, Quebec, as part of a contingency plan.
Air Canada's stock, which has been falling since early February, dropped 3.3 percent on Tuesday and an additional 3.4 percent on Wednesday, hitting its lowest point since 2009. The actively traded class B shares closed three Canadian cents lower at 85 Canadian cents.
PI Financial analyst Chris Murray said Premier, which does work for WestJet, was only one of a number of suppliers that could replace Aveos, and StandardAero, which has a facility in Winnipeg, could likely do some of the engine work.
Murray said concerns about the shutdown affecting Air Canada's business were overdone, and noted that traffic data was very strong. "Would you care if they changed catering companies?" he asked.
The government of the province of Manitoba, where more than 400 jobs were lost, said it had been touch with Quebec.
"We are eager to coordinate our response to the situation with Quebec," said spokeswoman Rachel Morgan. She said it was too early to say whether Manitoba would take legal action.
A spokeswoman for Denis Lebel, the federal transport minister, had no immediate comment on the possibility of legal action from Quebec or Manitoba.
On Monday spokeswoman Genevieve Sicard expressed sympathy with workers affected by Aveos's decision, while noting Aveos's "decisions are that of a private company."
Air Canada, which is trying to cut costs and change the way it operates, already has labor contract disputes with its pilots and machinists unions headed to binding arbitration. It faced a simultaneous strike and lockout earlier this month until the federal government intervened and ended up passing legislation to prevent a work stoppage.

So Bella is a vampire now. Hopefully that doesn't surprise anyone at this point, since everyone who saw "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" got a little sneak peek of those freaky-colored eyes of hers. As such, we should see a whole new side of Bella in this movie, my favorite scene being the one between her and Emmett and their arm wrestling. "I am 'hoping' to see some vampire action in the full trailer," Mathews said. "There are some great training scenes from the book I hope they include, as well as some great cottage scenes with Bella and Edward! I 'expect' to see lots of Bella as a vampire, and I'm OK with that!"
A Lee Pace Sighting
I've mentioned my enthusiasm for the new castmembers before, particularly my affection for Lee Pace, but it is worth repeating until more people appreciate him. Pace, whom you might recognize from his excellent work on the short-lived TV series "Pushing Daisies" or Tarsem's "The Fall," plays American nomadic vamp Garrett in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," and although he isn't one of the major players in the film, his character still has a nice arc and I'm dying to see more of him.
Mackenzie Foy as Renesmee Cullen
Remember when Edward and Bella had a baby? Of course you do; how can anyone forget that graphic scene? Anyway, baby Renesmee grows up really fast in the second film, and she's being played by beautiful young actress Mackenzie Foy, who has already told us a few adorable things about working with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. I would very much like to see her in action in the trailer.
A Shirtless Pattinson or Lautner
I'm sure there is a highbrow, intellectual approach to take here, but instead, I'm going to channel my inner-teenage girl and hope that we get to see some shirtlessness from Pattinson and Lautner. Trailers are all about enticing audiences to come see the movie, so why not serve up some gratuitous shots of the film's very handsome men for the very dedicated fans? "I have a feeling we will see tight close-ups of the Cullens, a shirtless werewolf and lots of trees," Mathews predicted. "Plus, you know there will be some great one-liners!"
Appropriately Angsty Background Music
In addition to the fanfare that surrounds the film's stars and the actual movie itself, there is plenty of enthusiasm for the various "Twilight" soundtracks that have been released over the years, so much so that certain bands have been rediscovered by making the cut. I'd like to hear either a familiar favorite, like Sleeping at Last's "Turning Page," or a brand-new and soon-to-be hit song over which we can swoon for a few months.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple appears to be making less of a profit from each new iPad than it did when it launched the previous model a year ago, according to a research firm's analysis.
IHS iSuppli took apart a new iPad on Friday, the day the device went on sale in the U.S. and nine other countries, and found that the components are more expensive than those of the iPad 2.
The third iPad comes in several versions starting at $499, the same price as the iPad 2 at launch.
Apple has priced all three generations of the tablet aggressively, making it hard for competitors to match its features at the same price. It makes less from each iPad than from each iPhone.
As a whole, Apple is wildly profitable, earning $33 billion in net income on $81 billion in revenue in the last calendar year.
ISuppli said a new iPad with 32 gigabytes of RAM and a cellular modem, which costs $729 in stores, costs $364.35 to manufacture. That's 9 percent more than the $335 it cost to make the corresponding iPad 2 a year ago, when it came out.
The corresponding version of the first iPad cost about $276 to make in 2010, according to iSuppli's estimate.
The higher-resolution display and the larger battery needed to support it are the main reasons the new iPad is more expensive than the iPad 2. It has four times as many pixels as the iPad 2's screen. ISuppli estimates the display costs Apple $87, plus $40 for the touch-sensitive layer.
The new iPad battery has 70 percent more capacity, but the new display consumes all that additional power, so the battery life is the same as for the old model.
Also contributing to the cost increase is the new cellular modem in some models. It can use faster "4G LTE" networks in the U.S. and Canada.
Samsung Electronics Co. remains the largest single supplier of iPad components. It made the display in the unit iSuppli examined and it supplies all iPad processors. ISuppli suspects Samsung also made the battery and supplies flash storage memory for some versions of the new iPad.
In fact, half of the new iPad's "bill of materials" may be for Samsung components, iSuppli said.
Apple and Samsung don't comment on their business relationships.
Samsung also makes its own tablets and they have succeeded better than most competitors.
ISuppli's cost estimate does not include packaging or overhead costs like design, marketing and software.
