G20 puts growth before austerity, vows to tread carefully

By Lidia Kelly and Jan Strupczewski

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Group of 20 nations pledged on Saturday to put growth before austerity, seeking to revive a global economy that "remains too weak" and adjusting stimulus policies with care so that recovery is not derailed by volatile financial markets.

Finance ministers and central bankers signed off on a communiqu? that acknowledged the benefits of expansive policies in the United States and Japan but highlighted the recession in the euro zone and a slowdown in emerging markets.

"While our policy actions have contributed to contain downside risks, those still remain elevated," the statement said. "There has been an increase in financial market volatility and a tightening of conditions.

Indications that the U.S. Federal Reserve would scale back its monetary stimulus dominated the two-day talks in Moscow, with emerging markets most concerned by a resulting selloff in stocks and bonds, and a flight to the dollar.

Hosts Russia said G20 policymakers had soft-pedaled on goals to cut government debt in favor of a focus on growth and how to exit central bank stimulus with a minimum of turmoil.

"(G20) colleagues have not made the decision to take responsibility to lower the deficits and debts by 2016," Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told Reuters. "Some people thought that first you need to ensure economic growth.

While the U.S. recovery is gaining traction, China's export motor is sputtering, Japan's bid to break out of deflation has not reached escape velocity, and demand in the euro zone is too weak to sustain a job-creating recovery.

Officials backed an action plan to boost jobs and growth, while rebalancing global demand and debt, that will be readied for a G20 leaders summit hosted by President Vladimir Putin in September.

"We remain mindful of the risks and unintended negative side effects of extended periods of monetary easing," the statement said. "Future changes to monetary policy settings will continue to be carefully calibrated and clearly communicated."

In return for its pledge to 'message' its monetary policy intentions clearly, Washington managed to ensure that the text contained no binding fiscal targets, saying that consolidation should be "calibrated" to economic conditions.

Sources at the meeting said Germany was less assertive than previously over commitments to reduce borrowing to follow on from a deal struck in Toronto in 2010, with the improving U.S. economy adding weight to Washington's call to focus on growth.

With youth unemployment rates approaching 60 percent in euro zone strugglers Greece and Spain, the growth versus austerity debate has shifted - reflected in the fact that G20 finance and labor ministers held a joint session on Friday.

The crisis in the euro zone periphery has been exacerbated by capital outflows, and the communiqu? pledged to move "decisively" with reforms to create a banking union in Europe that could revive cross-border lending.

Exchange rates and the threat of competitive devaluations barely figured, delegates said - in contrast to an ill-tempered G20 meeting in February colored by talk of currency wars.

TREAD WITH CARE

Ben Bernanke's announcement two months ago that the Fed may start to wind down its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases sparked a panicky sell-off, particularly in emerging markets.

Investors were calmed by testimony to Congress this week by Bernanke, who is not in Moscow, although he said the exit plan from money-printing remained on the cards.

The G20 accounts for 90 percent of the world economy and two-thirds of its population - many living in the large emerging economies at greatest risk of a reversal of capital inflows that have been one of the side effects of the Fed stimulus.

"One thing we would like to emphasize is the importance of coordination," said Indonesian Finance Minister Chatib Basri, cautioning that scaling back policies of quantitative easing elsewhere "immediately affects" emerging markets.

The International Monetary Fund warned that turbulence on global markets could deepen, while growth could be lower than expected due to stagnation in the euro zone and slowdown risks in the developing world.

"Global economic conditions remain challenging, growth is too weak, unemployment is too high and the recovery is too fragile," Managing Director Christine Lagarde told reporters.

"So more work is needed to improve this situation."

China faced calls to encourage domestic demand-driven growth and allow greater exchange rate flexibility as part of wider efforts to rebalance the global economy which features a huge Chinese surplus and matching U.S. deficit.

Beijing on Friday offered an olive branch, removing a floor on the rates banks can charge clients for loans, which should reduce the cost of borrowing for companies and households. Yet this received scant attention at the G20 talks.

Japan, which holds an upper house election on Sunday, in turn drew criticism for giving little detail on structural reforms billed as the 'third arrow' of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic turnaround plan, G20 sources said.

Finance Minister Taro Aso said Tokyo would strive to craft a credible fiscal plan by the time of the September G20 summit. Aso also said he would go ahead next April with a planned hike in sales taxes, key to stabilizing Japan's public debt which, at over 200 percent of GDP is the highest in the G20.

Large coronal hole near the sun's north pole

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Astronomers captured an image of a gigantic coronal hole hovering over the sun's north pole on July 18, 2013, at 9:06 a.m. EDT. Coronal holes are dark, low density regions of the sun's outermost atmosphere, the corona. They contain little solar material, have lower temperatures, and therefore, appear much darker than their surroundings.

Football Grizzlies impress American hosts

The GW Graham varsity and junior varsity football teams were in Oregon this week, joining 17 other high school teams at the Camp Rilea US Army base.

The Grizzlies went through four days of practices and scrimmages against tough American competition.

In their off time, the stayed in the army barracks and ate in the mess hall, and head coach Laurie Smith described it as 'a great team-building activity.'

This was the second year the Grizzlies have made the trip.

Last year, in the seven-on-seven passing league, GW Graham went 1-5 and looked overwhelmed in the process. This year, they went 4-2, making it to the final before losing to St. Mary's.

Players took part in a lineman challenge and tackled an army obstacle course.

They capped off the camp with games against Orcas Island (Washington State) and Salem Academy (Oregon).

The Grizzlies lost the junior varsity game 12-0 and tied the varsity match 6-6.

South Korea's fair trade commission clears Google after 2-year probe

South Korea's fair trade commission said Thursday a two-year investigation found that Google making its search service the default in Android-powered smartphones did not limit competition in the online search market.

Kwon Chul-hyun, a director at the commission, said the regulator found no evidence that Google unfairly used its power as the Android operating system maker to limit Korean search rivals.

NHN and Daum Communications, which operate South Korean Web portals and search engines, filed a complaint against the U.S. company in 2011.

Kwon said Google's service being the default search engine in Android devices had little impact on the market. NHN continues to dominate online search in South Korea with around 70 percent market share. Google has been struggling with around 10 percent.

He also said consumers can easily download other search applications.

Naver, a search engine operated by NHN, and Daum, operated by a namesake company, are the two largest Web portals and online search engines in South Korea.

The deeply wired country is one of the few in the world where Google has failed to surpass local companies in online search.

But rapid adoption of smartphones in South Korea has helped Google achieve some improvement in its once negligible presence in the country's online search market.

Families of Newtown victims to each receive $281,000

By Richard Weizel

MILFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - Families of 20 children and six adults killed in the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school each will receive $281,000 from the $11.4 million in donations, an oversight board said on Wednesday.

The Newtown Sandy Hook Foundation, which oversees the donations, also decided that the families of 12 children who witnessed and survived the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December each will get $20,000 and two teachers who were injured will split $150,000.

Of the total $11.4 million in donations raised with the help of the United Way charity, $7.7 million was set aside for the victims of what was one of the worst mass school shootings in U.S. history. The remaining $3.7 million was dedicated to a long-term community fund, a decision by the foundation board that has been criticized by some victims' families and Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy.

"You really have to ask the foundation board why it decided not to distribute all the donated funds to the families," said Kenneth Feinberg, who advised the distribution committee and also oversaw compensation for victims of the September 11, 2001, attacks, the theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado, and the Boston Marathon bombing.

Dr. Charles Herrick, chairman of the foundation board, pointed out "the board decided to distribute 95 percent of the funds directly to the families, but there are many, many victims - including 400 students at the school that day and all the first responders.

"We wanted to ensure there are some funds left for the future needs of people in the community who are going to need help," said Herrick, a Newtown resident and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry of the Western Connecticut Health Network, which oversees Danbury and New Milford Hospitals.

"This is a balancing act and there are other victims we have to think about too," he said. "This is a marathon, not a sprint and there's no way to know what problems will arise over the next 10 years."

In a letter to the board, Malloy insisted that an independent third party from outside of Newtown be chosen to oversee any remaining funds. Herrick said the board would press ahead with its plan to appoint another local distribution committee by mid-September to oversee the money.

BBC: Barclays? $453m fine for US energy market-rigging upheld

Jul 17 2013

Barclays must pay $435m within 30 days, while one trader must pay $15m and three others $1m each.

Barclays must also forgo $34.9m in profits, which will be distributed to low-income aid programmes in Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington.

Barclays said it intended to ?vigorously defend this matter?.

The fines were first proposed by staff at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) last October, and have now been upheld by the body?s board of commissioners.

FERC accused Barclays of manipulating the electricity markets in California and other states from November 2006 to December 2008.

But the bank said in a statement: ?We are disappointed by the action that FERC took today. We believe the penalty assessed by the FERC is without basis, and we strongly disagree with the allegations made.?

In addition to the company fine, Barclays traders Daniel Brin, Scott Connelly, Karen Levine and Ryan Smith ? who are accused of manipulating an index relating to electric energy prices in the western part of the US ? were ordered to pay substantial sums.

Watch NFL Players Awkwardly Use Google Glass

The "fun" tech question to ask famous people and/or grandmas in 2013 is what they think of Google Glass. Most usually this requires slapping Google Glass onto their face, making awkward conversation on how to control it, asking them to do what they do best and then talking about if they think it's the future or not. They almost always say yes.

Why did J.K. Rowling write under a pseudonym? 'Just for the joy of it'

Fellow bestselling author Stephen King and others in the literary community weigh in on J.K. Rowling's choice to release her latest book, 'The Cuckoo's Calling,' using a pen name.

By Molly Driscoll,?Staff Writer / July 16, 2013

J.K. Rowling called writing under the pen name of Robert Galbraith 'such a liberating experience.'

So when it broke that not only had Rowling written another book but that readers could already find it in stores as well as in e-book format, the novel shot to the top of bestseller lists as rapidly as it disappeared from bookshop shelves. How'd the public miss it? Rowling had released her novel, "The Cuckoo's Calling," under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith (described as a former member of the Royal Military Police).

"I had hoped to keep this secret a little longer," Rowling said in a statement. ?Being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience. It has been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation, and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name."

She also thanked "the writers and reviewers, both in the newspapers and online, who have been so generous to the novel."

It all made sense to horror writer Stephen King. King, who has also written under a pseudonym (he published short stories under the name Richard Bachman until Bachman's real identity was discovered), told USA Today he understood why the "Harry Potter" author would want to publish something under a new name.

"Jo is right about one big thing ? what a pleasure, what a blessed relief, to write in anonymity, just for the joy of it," he said. "Now that I know, I can't wait to read the book."

Although sales of Rowling's book lagged, reviews were effusive even before the actual author was discovered, with Publishers Weekly calling it a "stellar" debut and Library Journal writing that "Galbraith's take on contemporary celebrity obsession makes for a grand beach read. It's like a mash-up of Charles Dickens and Penny Vincenzi."

Crime writer Mark Billingham wrote it was "hard to believe this is a debut novel."

Amazon editorial director Sara Nelson said she admired what Rowling had done, seeming to want to receive honest criticism separate from the attention her name now inevitably brings.

"She wants to write," Nelson said of the author. "She just wants to work."

In addition, Nelson said she found the story unusual.

"Historically, writers have used a different name when they're going to write a different kind of book," she noted. Rowling's novel is a different genre from her normal fare, but that doesn't seem to be the reason she chose a pseudonym.

As for what publisher Little, Brown thought when it released a novel by a superstar under a false name, Nelson said she thinks both the publisher and Rowling knew the truth wouldn't stay buried.

"In this world, everyone knows nothing stays a secret forever," she said.

Will we now see a rash of novels released under pen names? Nelson doesn't think so.

"I don't think it's a trend," she said, noting that she thinks authors will continue to do it if they want to try a different genre, like "if John Grisham wanted to write a romance novel."

But Nelson thinks the success of "The Cuckoo's Calling" may prove enduring.

"If the word-of-mouth on this is good, and there'll be [more] reviews now.... I think this might have legs," she said.

Georgia Football Recruiting: Bulldogs Land 4 Commitments at Dawg Night Camp

It was raining cats and Dawgs at Georgia's annual Dawg Night football camp, but that didn't dampen the prospect of signing prospects.

Mark Richt and Co. landed four commitments in three days this past weekend, headlined by 4-star offensive guard Isaiah Wynn, but also including 4-star receiver Shakenneth Williams, 4-star safety Kendall Grant and 3-star tackle Dyshon Sims.

Wynn was the coup of the event, though, and it's easy to see why. He's not the biggest, strongest offensive lineman in the 2014 class (just 6'2'', 272 lb.), but he's versatile and scrappy and very technically sound. According to ESPN.com, he is the most-prized offensive line recruit Will Friend has landed since returning to Athens.

Williams earned an offer at the Mark Richt camp last month but didn't accept it on the spot. Folks in Athens were starting to get testy with his recruitment, and according to the?Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "There was speculation that the Bulldogs may consider seeking out other wide receivers if Williams waited much longer..." But now that he's locked in, the team can breathe a little easier.

Grant was one of the most highly sought-after safeties in the country before settling in at Georgia. He had offers on the table from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State and USC (among many, many others), but decided on Athens, telling the?Atlanta Journal-Consitution?that he "Just liked everything about it, and the coaching staff (are) real cool people."

Sims is the greatest unknown of the weekend's signings, a high-ceiling, low-basement-type prospect with great physical tools but very raw skills. 247Sports gives him a grade of 90, but his composite is just 85, indicating how over the map scouts are on his future.

Which UGA Commit Are You Most Excited About?

Which UGA Commit Are You Most Excited About?

  • OG Isaiah Wynn

  • WR Shakenneth Williams

  • S Kendall Grant

  • OT Dyshon Sims

All in all, the weekend was a major success for Georgia football. Its 2014 class is now up to 15 hard commitments, already including the likes of 5-star running back Sony Michel, 4-star quarterback Jacob Park, 4-star running back Nick Chubb and 4-star cornerback Malcolm Parrish.

247Sports now ranks Georgia third in the country behind Alabama and Florida State, up 10 spots from the previous ratings.?In 2013, Georgia finished 11th in 247Sports' ratings?its first sub-top-10 class since 2010.

There's still plenty of work left to do, but after a successful weekend, the Bulldogs are well on their way to finishing higher in 2014.

Numero Uno Web Solutions, a Toronto-Based Internet Marketing ...

Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-size business-to-consumer companies, announces its top search engine optimization (SEO) factors to consider when designing a web site.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) July 14, 2013

Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-size business-to-consumer companies, announces its top search engine optimization (SEO) factors to consider when designing a web site.

?Every online business wants to rank on the first page of search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. After all, brands that turn up on the coveted first page of search results capture over 90% of all traffic,? says Marco Reuter, business development manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions. "The first place smaller businesses need to start when planning their SEO strategies is with web design. Not only is it the first impression potential customers get, but it?s also a reflection of the brand. So it?s not just important that people can find the web site online, but they also need to be able to connect with it."

Brands with web sites that are easy to navigate across multiple platforms?including desktop computers, tablets, and smartphones?can significantly improve their search engine ranking, Reuter explains. Virtually all [97%] consumers search for local businesses online. When users visit a site, they need to be able to easily locate the business name, logo, and relevant information. Businesses that fail to design a web site that is user-friendly are losing out on both traffic and sales. (Source: Google, ?Free features,? http://www.google.com/business/placesforbusiness/free-features/, last accessed July 11, 2013.)

"Writing original content that incorporates keywords that emphasize or describe a brand?s products or services is also paramount when it comes to web design. After all, for search engines to know where to rank a site and drive web site traffic, they need to know what the web site is all about," Reuter observes. ?To rank higher on search engines and attract traffic, smaller businesses need to have their sites optimized using the keywords that emphasize their practice. To rank higher on Google, it?s also important to vary the keywords that get used.?

According to the experts at Numero Uno, an often overlooked consideration of SEO web design is the use of visual aids, including images, video, and infographics. Each of these can be effective SEO tools for getting specific web pages indexed on Google.

SEO is about getting online users to click through to the brand?s web site, Reuter adds. There are a lot of proven web design strategies that can directly influence the way search engines index web pages. The more web pages that rank higher on search engine queries, the greater the chances are of people visiting the site.

?By being proactive and integrating proven SEO strategies into the web design process from the beginning, smaller firms have a better chance of successfully ranking higher on search engine results pages,? Reuter concludes.

The price of a used car just went up by a huge amount as a rare Mercedes-Benz racer sells for a record amount. The 1954 Mercedes W196 R Formula 1 racer became the most expensive car in the world ever sold at auction. An anonymous bidder bought the race car that was driven by five-time F1 world champion driver Juan Manual Fangio. The car was sold for a record $29.65 million making it the most expensive used car in the world sold at auction.

This rare car was sold by Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Friday. It now holds the distinction of being the most expensive F1 car ever sold and the most valuable Mercedes-Benz in the world. The 2.5-liter straight-eight cylinder engine racer was driven by Fangio to the first successive wins by the Mercedes-Benz F1 team in the German racing crew?s post-World War II comeback.

Previous record held by Ferrari

The previous record amount for a car selling at auction was held by a Ferrari. A 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa sold for $16.4 million back in 2011. The racer now becomes the highest priced Mercedes-Benz in the world and purchased by a private buyer over the phone. The price is said to included the buyers premium.

But this 1954 racer wasn?t the most expensive car ever sold. In a private sale last year, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, raced by Stirling Moss sold for $35 million. The famous green car was one of 39 GTOs that were produced from 1962 to 1964. The Sterling Moss racer was sold privately by Eric Heerema, a Dutch-born businessman who lives in England. The buyer was American classic car collector Craig McCaw.

Another famous car sold at Goodwood

Last weeks auction by Bonhams saw another famous Ferrari sell. John Lennon?s 1965 Ferrari GT coupe sold for $543,887 and was his first car. The late Beatle purchased the blue Ferrari after he passed his driving test in 1965 in England. He sold the car three years later. The car sold for considerably more than its pre-sale estimated value of $332,000.

Collector cars are a good investment, and buyers are snatching up these rare cars as they continue to increase in value. Ferrari?s are hot among collectors and there have been a number of big-ticket Ferrari sales in the last two years. According to data compiled by the London-based Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI), prices for classic Ferraris increased 4.82 percent in the first quarter of 2012.

For wealthy individuals looking to diversify their investments, these highly collectible cars will continue to increase in value. For now, the 1954 Mercedes W196 R Formula 1 racer driven by Juan Manual Fangio holds the record as the highest price used car sold at auction in the world. We?ll see how long this record stands.

NCAA Player Marshall Henderson Allegedly Had Marijuana, Cocaine Possession

Just days after NCAA team Mississippi Rebels suspended Marshall Henderson, the shooting guard is now linked to possession of marijuana and cocaine.

This news bit was based on information from police officers who stopped Henderson last May while in traffic for his failure to present a proof of insurance. While the police reported to have discovered small amounts of coke and cannabis in Henderson?s car, the Ole Miss player was not arrested because he was cooperative during the traffic stop.

According to Oxford Police, there are some cases wherein incidents of this type are not slapped with formal charges, and are instead allowed to release the person being investigated. In fact, during the traffic stop against Henderson, the illegal substances found in the car were not tested for confirmation, according to a news report.

Still, the heads at Ole Miss are not taking this situation lightly. Head coach Andy Kennedy released a statement, requiring Henderson to maintain a respectable demeanor as a representative of the Mississippi basketball team.

On a friendlier tone, Fresno State shooter Chris Herren advised Henderson to ?incorporate some balance in his life and surround himself with people who have the same dream he does.?

Henderson started playing as a shooting guard for Ole Miss last year, with a career average of 20 points, 3 rebounds and close to 2 assists.

Pink Up: Eating to prevent breast cancer

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Next time you walk into a grocery store, know the foods you put in your basket could reduce your risk of breast cancer.

A study published in the British Medical Journal said consuming fish oil can significantly lower a person?s risk of developing breast cancer by 14 percent.

"Everyone knew it's beneficial, but no one had actually documented it, so now we have data to say you know it's good for you," said Dr. Olivia Aranha, a breast cancer specialist at Saint Francis Medical Center.

But when you?re walking through the store, what are you looking to pick up?

"Typically the American diet is lacking in Omega 3s,? said Candice O?Hare, a registered dietitian at Saint Francis Medical Center.

O?Hare said one of the best sources of the Omega 3 fatty acids is fish oil. Experts said can take a supplement of about a gram a day.

"Salmon is a great source of omega 3s," said

O?Hare said you can also get the acids from oily fish like salmon, tuna, trout, or sardines; fresh, frozen, or canned. Research suggests having one to two servings per week.

"I think we're intimidated by fish. We are a society that knows a lot about poultry and beef and what foods go well with those, but fish is sometimes overwhelming and I think it's really just about looking at your diet and what can you do," said O?Hare.

O?Hare said plant sources are great like walnuts or flax seed, even oils.

"A natural form of omega 3s is going to be your canola oils, as well as your flaxseed oils, or soybean oils," said O?Hare.

And a last resort, you can get the benefits from products enhanced with Omega 3s.

"You wouldn't want to base your Omega intake off of something that's enhanced with it," said O?Hare.

Aranha said the oils prevent estrogen in the body, reducing cancer cell growth.

So next time you fix a plate, you might want to think twice, and choose the fish.

"It really is all about prevention and like I said if we could do something and bring in food components that help our health overall, it's like let?s do it," said O?Hare.

"The take home message from this study is if you're not already doing it, go ahead and start taking a fish oil supplement, a gram a day wouldn't hurt, it would have more than one benefit," said Aranha.

If you?re looking for a way to add fish into your diet, here are a few recipes.

Fantasy baseball world: Three players with surprising performances

Patrick Corbin

July 13, 2013, 3:22 p.m.

Staff writer Tim Hubbard looks at three players whose surprising performances in the first half have earned them roster spots in Tuesday's All-Star game in New York.

Patrick Corbin

SP | Arizona

When the Angels traded for Dan Haren in July 2010, many Angels fans were unhappy to see the team part with Joe Saunders, who had won 33 games over the previous two seasons. But it has turned out to be Corbin, the other pitcher the team threw into the deal, that has the Angels brass shaking their heads everytime Joe Blanton or Jerome Williams get roughed up. Corbin, whom the Angels drafted in the second round in 2009, has hit center stage in 2013 and has an 11-1 record with a 2.35 earned-run average and 1.00 WHIP in helping the Diamondbacks hold on to first place in the National League West.

Manny Machado

3B | Baltimore

What's not to love about Machado? He is hitting .315 with 39 doubles, making him a threat to challenge Earl Webb's season mark of 67 set in 1931. He is making plays that Brooks Robinson would love to add to his highlight reel. To top it off, he's younger than Yasiel Puig and Mike Trout, having turned 21 on July 6.

Domonic Brown

OF | Philadelphia

From 2010 to 2012, Brown never could find his footing or his swing in the majors, hitting only .236 and playing sporadically behind Shane Victorino, Raul Ibanez, Jayson Werth and Hunter Pence. This season, with a starting spot to call his own, Brown turned heads by hitting 12 home runs in 14 games May 26-June 5. He is hitting .261 with 23 home runs, 64 runs batted in and eight stolen bases. It may be time for the Phillies to entertain deals for some of their veterans, and begin rebuilding their lineup around the 25-year-old Brown.

In Forum: Software/Application/Game Support and Discussion By User: Rob Jansen The BIOS date is 1 day after the compile date. And one thing to note is that there are BIOS dates even in RTM builds. The way to get the "timebomb date" is to go to "Gallery" in the blue area and find the screenshot of winver of the build. Well , in RTM builds , you do not have to set the BIOS date. Yeah but Rob Jansen put that in TCB. It is done automatically, since we only input the buildstring, the system sets the BIOS Date 1 day ahead of the buildstring. ...

US, China trade barbs about Snowden case

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. and China wrapped up two days of high-level talks on security and economy in upbeat fashion Thursday, but not before trading barbs about NSA leaker Edward Snowden and human rights.

The two sides announced more cooperation on combating climate change and their plans to negotiate a bilateral investment treaty.

But Deputy Secretary of State William Burns said the U.S. was very disappointed how authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong handled Snowden's case by refusing to extradite him before he flew to Russia.

"China's handling of this case was not consistent with the spirit of Sunnylands and the new type of relationship that we both seek to build," Burns said, referring to the summit a month ago between President Barack Obama and China's new president, Xi Jinping, at a California resort.

Obama also expressed disappointment about the Snowden case when he met Thursday in the Oval Office with the two leaders of the Chinese delegation, a White House statement said.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi, who was sitting on the same dais as Burns as they closed the talks, retorted in his remarks that the handling of the case by authorities in semi-autonomous Hong Kong was "beyond reproach."

Yang also rejected U.S. criticism of China's rights record in the ethnic minority areas of Tibet and Xinjiang, saying people there are "enjoying happier lives and they enjoy unprecedented freedom and human rights."

He added: "We hope the U.S. will improve its own human rights situation."

About 120 Tibetans have set themselves on fire since 2011 to protest Chinese policies in Tibet and call for the return of the Dalai Lama, their exiled spiritual leader. In the far western region of Xinjiang, minority Muslims are also agitating against Beijing and clashes in recent months have killed at least 56 people.

The stark differences of opinion on those issues did not prevent kind words on both sides too.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew hailed the "personal approach" of China's new generation of leaders under Xi, who ascended to China's presidency in March in a once-in-a-decade power transition.

China's Vice Premier Wang Yang, whom U.S. officials say has demonstrated a keen sense of humor in this week's talks, quipped that Lew is smarter than he is and they've become good friends.

It's a sign of the importance the Obama administration puts on its relationship with China leaders that the president received the visiting officials and did so in the Oval Office, where more typically heads of government and state are hosted.

Obama welcomed China's commitment to open its economy to U.S. investment in the bilateral investment treaty ? a pact that Washington has been urging Beijing to negotiate in earnest on for years. The Chinese also agreed with him on the importance of cooperating to get North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons.

But Obama added that the United States would continue to speak out in support of international norms such as the protection of universal human rights, the White House statement said.

Actress Leah Remini leaves Church of Scientology

Remini's representatives would not comment on the New York Post article. Representatives for the Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The actress, 43, has spoken publicly in the past about being a member of the Church of Scientology, which was founded in 1954 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard and has attracted several Hollywood stars including Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

The organisation describes its practices as a religion and believes man is an immortal being whose experience extends beyond one lifetime.

But some observers ? including media mogul Rupert Murdoch ? liken it to an alleged cult and there have been accusations that Scientologists pressurise people who seek to quit.

The church came under fresh scrutiny last year when actress Katie Holmes suddenly divorced Cruise, with whom she has one daughter. Although there was speculation that Holmes had rejected Scientology, neither she nor Cruise addressed a split over the faith.

In an April 2001 interview with CNN, Remini said she "finds solace in her steadfast practice of Scientology," and jumped to the defense of the religion.

"If somebody is going to get turned off about something because of what they read or heard, then that person's not smart enough to even enter a church," Remini said to CNN.

Other notable former Scientology members include director Paul Haggis, who spoke out in detail about his experiences with the church in a New Yorker article in February 2011.
