President Barack Obama is welcoming his favorite foil, former President George W. Bush, back to the White House on Thursday for the official unveiling of Bush's portrait. Given the history, the scene ought to be quite a picture.

It was just one week ago that Obama, revving up campaign donors, turned Bush into a punch line. Obama depicted presumptive Republican presidential nominee Romney as a peddler of bad economic ideas, helping the rich at the expense of the middle class. He then added: "That was tried, remember? The last guy did all this."

Now the last guy is coming back.

Only 43 men in history, and five men alive, have held the job.

It will be a rare limelight moment for Bush, who has not been back in more than two years.

Obama and Bush have a cordial and respectful relationship, but they are not close.

Both are political veterans who are able to separate political tactics from what they see as an overarching community among people who have served in the Oval Office, according to people close to them.

History has marked this moment before, with grudges put aside.

When Bill Clinton came back for his portrait unveiling, Bush lauded him for "the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president." This after he ran for the presidency to "restore honor and dignity" after Clinton's sex scandal.

And when Clinton welcomed back George H.W. Bush, whom he had defeated, he said to him and his wife: "Welcome home. We're glad to have you here."

"I would be surprised if there's very much tension" this time around, said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University who has long followed Bush's career.

Obama has enlisted Bush's help on earthquake relief for Haiti, and the two stood together in New York City last year in marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on America. They have also spoken at least three times at signature moments over the last three years, including the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Still, Obama's bashing of Bush's record sets a backdrop.

"This president is looking for someone to blame," Romney said while campaigning in Colorado this week. "Of course, he started off by blaming George Bush, and that worked for a while but, you know, after three and a half years that wears kind of thin."

The White House points out that Obama praises Bush sometimes, too, such as for taking on illegal immigration.

The visit is layered with political story lines.

Bush's brother Jeb is a potential vice presidential candidate to Romney. Bush's father has developed a kinship of sorts with Obama. And then there is Bush himself, who has endorsed Romney but is still viewed by many in his party as politically toxic.

More than any president in recent memory, Bush has not just intentionally faded from the public spotlight but all but disappeared from it.

Bush was last at the White House in January 2010 to help out with Haiti humanitarian relief.

Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said the former president and first lady are grateful to the Obamas and looking forward to catching up with faces from their past, including staff at the Executive Mansion.

Jenna Bush Hager, one of the George W. Bush's daughters, told "Fox & Friends" the day will be a chance to "celebrate his work, 'cause he worked pretty hard, so I think he deserves at least a painting."

As to where it will go, she said: "Probably in the very back somewhere. I'm just kidding."

Clean Air Council honors ?Young Lungs at Play? communities at ...

At its 31st Annual Clean Air Council 5K Run for Clean Air on April 21st, the Council presented a certificate of recognition to communities and organizations that recently adopted the Young Lungs at Play program. This initiative assists municipalities, school districts and youth recreation and sports organizations in passing local ordinances, policies or resolutions that designate parks, playgrounds and athletic fields as tobacco-free. In support of the Young Lungs at Play initiative, the Council designated its 5K Run for Clean Air tobacco-free and announced other communities and organizations that recently took similar steps.

Youth from the Council Rock Coalition for Healthy Youth helped bring this program to their local community, by attending Parks and Recreation meetings in Northampton Township and encouraging board members to consider signage promoting tobacco-free designations in their local parks. The Parks and Recreation Board at their March meeting adopted a policy which does not allow the use of tobacco products in tobacco-free zones in township parks and recreation facilities. A tobacco-free zone is any area within 50 feet of active recreation including but not limited to the amphitheater, athletic fields, basketball courts, hockey rinks, playgrounds and tennis courts.?

Gerry Lemly, Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board, said, ?This policy echoes what the youth sports organizations have been advocating for years. Our community already strongly supports protecting the health of our children.?It was only a matter of time that this policy be adopted.?

?The Young Lungs at Play initiative protects the health of children by creating safe, healthy and clean places for them to play?, stated Donna Foisy, Youth Coordinator for the Council Rock Coalition for Healthy Youth.?

The Surgeon General reports that secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard with no safe level of exposure. Children are at particular risk for asthma, respiratory infections and cardiovascular disease when exposed to tobacco smoke. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies tobacco smoke as a Class-A carcinogen. Exposure to secondhand smoke is estimated to cause at least 38,000 deaths each year in the United States and more than one million illnesses in children.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) ? Two Danish brothers originally from Somalia have been arrested on suspicion of plotting a terror attack, Denmark's security service said Tuesday.

The men were charged with receiving training with the aim of committing an act of terror, in what the agency said are the first known terror-trained suspects in Denmark.

"According to PET's assessment, the arrests have prevented a concrete act of terror and the arrests therefore don't lead to a changed evaluation of the terror threat in Denmark," the agency said, adding that the terror threat level in Denmark remains "serious."

PET's former operative chief Hans Joergen Bonnichsen said previous suspects had been "kitchen-table terrorists" with no experience or training.

The Scandinavian country has been in the crosshairs of Islamist terror groups after the publication of newspaper cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in 2005.

"To me there is no doubt that the latest arrests are rooted in the Muhammad cartoons," Bonnichsen said.

A Somali man living in Denmark was convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 10 years in prison after breaking into the home of one of the cartoonists with an ax in 2010.

Last year, a Chechen-born man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for preparing a letter bomb that exploded as he was assembling it in a Copenhagen hotel in 2010.

Another trial is under way in Denmark against four men accused of plotting a shooting spree at another Danish newspaper.

Brother of blind Chinese activist returns home, says lawyer

BEIJING, May 27 ? The brother of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng who was reported to have gone missing has returned to his village in northeastern China, a lawyer said yesterday.

The short disappearance of Chen Guangfu had sparked concerns he was the latest target of government reprisals against the family of the activist, who escaped from his village in late April after 19 months of detention at home.

Shandong-based lawyer Liu Weiguo told Reuters Chen Guangfu had returned to Dongshigu village. Liu earlier said the activist was ?very worried? about his brother?s disappearance and was contacting friends to look for him.

?Brother Fu is now home,? Liu said, adding he had received a text message from Chen Guangfu last night.

Chen Guangfu had left his village on Tuesday and arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to seek legal help for his son who is detained on a charge of attempted murder. Friends and family had tried to contact him since Friday evening after it appeared he did not return to his hotel room in Beijing that night.

His son Chen Kegui, 32, was charged with ?intentional homicide? for using knives to fend off local officials who burst into his home on April 27, the day after they discovered his uncle had escaped.

He could face the death penalty. His lawyers, denied access to him last week, said he did not kill anyone.

On Wednesday, Chen Guangfu had recounted to Reuters details of his own torture and reprisals by authorities since his brother?s escape.

He said he was restricted from leaving his village, and police in Shandong warned him they would increase his son?s sentence if he gave interviews.

Activist Chen Guangcheng took refuge in the US embassy last month, where he stayed for six days and sparked a diplomatic crisis between China and the United States.

That crisis, which overshadowed a visit by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was finally defused last Saturday when China allowed Chen to fly to the United States to study. ? Reuters

Sony and Sharp end joint LCD venture

Sony and Sharp announced the end to a partnership formed in 2009, when Sony invested $126 million (?80 billion) in Sharp's LCD display business and received a 7 percent stake in the display manufacturer.

And, by September this year they would decide what the future of the two companies' collaboration would be.

The deal was said to facilitate cost-cutting on LCD screen components through bulk purchases from both companies.

Sharp will reportedly continue making large displays, while Foxconn will still stick to smaller screens.

Sony, the jilted lover?

Sony, meanwhile, under the leadership of new CEO Kaz Hirai, announced that they intend to return to profitability this year after seven straight years in the red.

To that end, Sony announced plans last month to axe 10,000 jobs in an ongoing move to reign in the company's ailing TV business. This is the third such mass exodus Sony's seen since 2005.

And just yesterday TechRadar reported that Sony (and Samsung) have begun enforcing minimum prices on televisions to deter retailers from setting competitive, but loss-making, price points.

KITTERY, Maine (AP) ? Officials hoped to begin venting smoke and noxious fumes from a nuclear-powered submarine on Thursday so they could get inside to assess damage from an intense blaze that swept through the forward compartments.

Workers had to wait for the USS Miami to cool enough for fresh air to be safely introduced without risk of another fire.

The fire broke out Wednesday evening while the sub was in dry dock during a 20-month overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Authorities said nuclear components were not threatened, but firefighters had to work in cramped quarters and extreme heat.

Rear Adm. Richard Breckenridge praised the submarine's crew, shipyard firefighters and additional firefighters from Maine and New Hampshire, saying there were "a lot of heroes that worked together to save the ship."

"The fire spread to spaces within the submarine that were difficult to access, presenting a challenging situation for initial responders. But they persevered in incredible heat and smoke conditions, demonstrating exceptional courage," the admiral told reporters at the entrance of the shipyard.

The fire damaged forward compartments including living quarters, the command and control center, and the torpedo room, leading to speculation whether costly repairs would be undertaken on the 22-year-old Los Angeles-class attack submarine.

"The duration of the fire suggests extensive damage that could render the vessel useless. These submarines were designed decades ago. So they're no longer state of the art," said Loren Thompson, defense analyst at the Lexington Institute. "If this vessel returns to service, I will be amazed."

Working in the submarine's favor was the fact that workers had removed some of the equipment and gutted part of the submarine during the retrofit, said U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree after meeting with the shipyard commander.

There were no details on th ecause, and an investigation will take some time, said Breckenridge, commander of Submarine Group Two in Groton, Conn., where the USS Miami is based.

Firefighters from more than a dozen towns joined in battling the fire, first reported at 5:40 p.m. It wasn't doused until early Thursday.

Pingree described it as a "hot scary mess."

"It takes a lot of guts to into a burning building. But the idea of going into a submarine full of hot toxic smoke ? that's real courage," she said.

Two sailors, three shipyard firefighters and two civilian firefighters were hurt, but their injuries were minor, officials said.

Firefighters isolated the flames so they would not spread to nuclear propulsion spaces at the rear of the submarine. There was nuclear fuel on board the sub, but the reactor has been shut down for two months and was unaffected.

Residents reported hearing sirens from fire trucks and ambulances throughout the night, and the smoke spread over the area.

"It smelled like plastic burning," said Janet Howe of Kittery, who lives three-quarters-of-a-mile from the shipyard.

Reporters were not allowed onto the base to see the submarine Thursday. But Pingree and others who viewed the vessel said there were no outward signs of damage, because the fire was contained inside the 360-foot-long hull.

The rear compartments including the nuclear propulsion unit remained habitable, and crew members never left that part of the sub during the fire, Breckenridge said.

It was unclear how many people were aboard the vessel or what type of work was being done when the fire started. The submarine, commissioned in 1990, has a crew of 13 and 120 enlisted personnel. It arrived at the shipyard March 1.
