DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) ? Turkish warplanes killed at least 35 people in an air strike in southeastern Turkey near the Iraqi border overnight, apparently mistaking smugglers for Kurdish militants, a pro-Kurdish party and local officials said on Thursday.
Turkish warplanes strike militant targets regularly in the region in their battle against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrillas, and have stepped up raids after a PKK attack in August.
"We have 30 corpses, all of them are burned. The state knew that these people were smuggling in the region. This kind of incident is unacceptable. They were hit from the air," said Fehmi Yaman, mayor of Uludere in Sirnak province.
The pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) said in a statement 35 people had been killed, adding that party leaders were heading for the area.
The Turkish government was not immediately available for comment.
Smuggling is an important source of income for locals in provinces along the Iraqi border, with many villagers involved in bringing fuel, cigarettes and other goods from Iraqi villages on the other side of the border.
PKK militants also cross the border in these areas.
"There were rum ours that the PKK would cross through this region. Images were recorded of a crowd crossing last night, hence an operation was carried out," a Turkish security official said.
"We could not have known whether these people were (PKK) group members or smugglers," he said.
Television images showed a line of corpses covered by blankets on a barren hillside, with a crowd of people gathered around, some with their head in their hands and crying.
People loaded the corpses onto donkeys which were led down the hillside to be loaded into vehicles to be taken to hospital in the mainly Kurdish southeast of the country.
Security sources said those killed were carrying canisters of diesel on mules and their bodies were found on the Iraqi side of the border.
They said those killed were from Uludere on the Turkish side of the border on what was a regular smuggling route.
The Firat news agency, which has close ties to the PKK, said that 17 people were still believed to be missing. It said those killed were aged around 17-20.
The PKK, regarded as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States, launches attacks on Turkish forces in southeastern Turkey from hideouts inside the remote Iraqi mountains.
Turkey and Iran have often skirmished with rebels in the region and Turkish leaders vowed revenge in October with air and ground strikes after the PKK killed 24 Turkish soldiers in raids on military outposts in southeastern Turkey.
It was one of the deadliest attacks since the PKK took up arms in 1984 in a conflict in which more than 40,000 people have been killed.

The French parliament is expected to pass a bill Thursday dealing with the 1915 killing of Armenians in present-day Turkey.? Any denial could result in a one-year jail term and a $58,000 fine. Turkey is furious.
Nearly 100 years have elapsed since the killing of thousands of Armenians, but the wounds seem far from healed.
Skip to next paragraphThe French parliament is to vote on a bill on Thursday making it illegal to deny that the 1915 killing of Armenians during World War I was genocide.? The bill, which is expected to pass, provides for a one-year prison term and a fine of $58,000 (45,000 euros) to anyone who publicly denies it was genocide.?
The vote in the French National Assembly has stirred a diplomatic frenzy and French and Turkish politicians are jumping into the fray.?
?This proposed law targets and is hostile to the Republic of Turkey, the Turkish nation and the Turkish community living in France,? Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish Prime Minister wrote in a letter to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Reuters reports.?
During a Saturday news conference, Mr. Erdogan suggested that France ought to investigate her own role and actions in colonial Africa, including Rwanda.?
Turkey maintains that the proposed bill is a political ploy by Sarkozy's political party to win the votes of 500,000 Armenians in France ahead of next year?s parliamentary and presidential elections. Sarkozy has also been an outspoken opponent of Turkey desire to join the European Union.
Jean Leonetti, the European Affairs Minister of France, dismisses such allegations and says that opposition Socialists will endorse the bill as well. ??It has been nearly 100 years since the Armenian genocide took place, those responsible are dead, it is simply a matter of recognizing a fact of history,? he told Radio Classique, The Telegraph in London reports.
Ersin Onulduran, chairman of the department of international relations at Ankara University, told Today's Zaman, a Turkish daily, that ?only historians and archival experts should pass judgment on the merits of historical events.?
Although there is little consensus, Armenians say that about 1.5 million people were killed during the mass deportations of 1915-16.
The Turkish government acknowledges the death of many Armenians, yet, it denies that Ottoman forces deliberately exterminated them.?? Turkey considers the numbers as inflated and says that Turks were also killed due to the upheaval that followed the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. ?
Many Turks, disappointed and disillusioned by European delays over entry into the EU, are now embracing a more assertive rhetoric.
?I want to state clearly that such steps will have grave consequences for future relations between Turkey and France in political, economic, cultural and all areas,? Erdogan said according to Reuters.? While Turkey implicitly threatens to boycott French products if the bill passes, it has ruled out imposing trade sanctions.
So far this year, bilateral trade between Turkey and France is estimated at more than $13.5 billion.? About 1,000 French companies operate in Turkey.
"We have to remember international rules and with regard to Turkey it's a member of the WTO (World Trade Organization) and is linked to the European Union by a customs union and these two commitments mean a non-discriminatory policy towards all companies within the European Union," said French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero, Reuters reports.
In 2006, a similar bill was introduced and approved by the French National Assembly but was later dropped by the Senate.? In France, any legislative initiative requires the endorsement of both parliament and the Senate to be enacted.?

'Deathly Hallows, Part 2' among several sequels to make it in the top 10.

Harry Potter said goodbye to Hogwarts and movie theaters in 2011, but not without earning boatloads of cash along the way.
The boy who lived dominated the box office this past year with more than $1.3 billion worldwide, making him the undoubted winner in a less-than-stellar year financially for movies, but "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" wasn't the only sequel to succeed. Eight of the top 10 earners at the theaters belonged to sequels, prequels or remakes.
This trend is what Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, sees as the big box office story of 2011, for good and bad. "You can't deny sequels' potency at the box office, with seven of the top 10 grossing films of 2011 being continuing sagas — eight if you count 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,'" Bock said.
But not every movie with a number slapped onto the back of it fared as well as "Harry Potter." Bock pointed out that holiday sequels like "Happy Feet Two," "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," all underperformed compared to their predecessors.
"You could also argue that sequels are part of the problem, too," Bock said. "The domestic box office looks like it's going to come up short in terms of overall grosses and drop 3 percent versus last year, with attendance down nearly 5 percent — which will hit its lowest point in 15 years. That's a no-win for the entire industry."
As for surprise successes and failures, two films stuck out to Bock, the comedy hit "Bridesmaids" and DC's disappointer "Green Lantern."
"Bridesmaids" made $288 million worldwide on a budget of just $32 million, Bock said. "It was finally a coming out party for women of comedy," Bock said of what he called the "female 'Hangover.' " "Universal has already made plans for a sequel, and the brides-to-be are now flirting with A-list status."
Ryan Reynolds' most recent foray into the superhero realm did just the opposite. "This was supposed to be the next Batman for the studio, and it nearly turned into 'Howard the Duck,' " Bock said. "Well, it wasn't that bad, but when you spend $200 million on a film, you obviously expect to make more than $219 million worldwide. And that's not including all the marketing and print advertising that went into the big-budget blockbuster."
For 2012, Bock expects even more sequel domination, especially with the lineup of franchise films coming out next year. He predicts "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" will top with box office in the #1 and #2 slots, respectively, with "The Hobbit," "The Avengers" and "Men in Black 3" rounding out the top five.
Check out everything we've got on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

This is a private roleplay between myself and AkiraAsylum.
Early morning, when the sun rises and the rooster caws. It meant the start of another day for the servants of the royal court. One in particular, A young Chambermaid to the king himself, woke on this morning. She was quick to dress in her uniform, a pale dress and a dark apron tied around her waist. She had her raven hair tied up and out of the way. When she was satisfied with her appearance she left the servants quarters and rushed to the kitchens. The cook had been awake for a good amount of time now, already preparing breakfast. When the young woman entered she was greeted with a warm smile, One of the few she would see that day.
"Morning Yvette." The cook grumbled through his thick mustache. Yvette returned the warm smiled and nodded. "I am to wake the king in a few moments time. Is his meal ready?" She asked softly, turning to the silver platter that was meant to carry the food. The cook nodded, quickly placing the plates of cooked meats and toast, fresh juices and a plate of eggs. Yvette gave a faint nod and gathered the tray up, turning from the kitchen. She made her way up the twisting stair cases and through the hallways until she came to a large ornate door adorned with a large red and gold lions head.
Yvette nudged the door open with her foot and slipped inside, resting the tray on the dark wooden table by the kinds bed side. She set out the plates, turned to the closet to get the kings clothes for the day ready then turned back to the bed. "My Lord." She said softly, reaching out to gently touch the kinds shoulder. The man stirred and his cold eyes turned up to meet the young maids. He said nothing, only grunted at her presence while he sat. Yvette didn't need to be spoken to in order to know what the king desired. She fetched the plate of assorted meats and presented it to her king, bowing her head.
When the king was fed and dressed he stood, hardly glancing at the maid at his side. "Take these plates to the kitchens, then greet the knights when they arrive." He commanded. Yvette bowed once, gathered the dishes and turned to do as she was asked. She stood at the gates with her hands folded, waiting for the knights to arrive.

LONDON ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.
Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple Inc. to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.
Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos. The company's main website was down, with a banner saying the "site is currently undergoing maintenance."
Proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, however, with the main threat posed to individual employees who had subscribed.
"Not so private and secret anymore?" Anonymous taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.
Anonymous said the client list it had already posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit card details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.
Fred Burton, Stratfor's vice president of intelligence, said the company had reported the intrusion to law enforcement and was working with them on the investigation.
Stratfor has protections in place meant to prevent such attacks, he said.
"But I think the hackers live in this kind of world where once they fixate on you or try to attack you it's extraordinarily difficult to defend against," Burton said.
Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and credit card account details.
"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the `A's," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.
The attack is "just another in a massive string of breaches we've seen this year and in years past," said Josh Shaul, chief technology officer of Application Security Inc., a New York-based provider of database security software.
Still, companies that shared secret information with Stratfor in order to obtain threat assessments might worry that the information is among the 200 gigabytes of data that Anonymous claims to have stolen, he said.
"If an attacker is walking away with that much email, there might be some very juicy bits of information that they have," Shaul said.
Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.
"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.
Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.
Anonymous also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.
"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.
One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.
Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.
"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.
"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."
Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.
The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.
"They took money I did not have," he told The Associated Press in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think `Why me?' I am not rich."
But the breach doesn't necessarily pose a risk to owners of the credit cards. A card user who suspects fraudulent activity on his or her card can contact the credit card company to dispute the charge.
Stratfor said in an email to members that it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.
"We have reason to believe that the names of our corporate subscribers have been posted on other web sites," said the email, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman and passed on to AP by subscribers. "We are diligently investigating the extent to which subscriber information may have been obtained."
"Stratfor's relationship with its members and, in particular, the confidentiality of their subscriber information, are very important to Stratfor and me," Friedman wrote.
One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" News ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.
It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.
Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."
The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on credit card companies Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc., eBay Inc.'s PayPal, as well as other groups in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

ASTRONAUTS will soon be able to stay fit thanks to a body tracking camera system built into Microsoft's Kinect gaming sensor, which helps calculate their weight in zero gravity.
Even during missions that last just a few weeks spacefarers can lose up to 15 per cent of their body mass because their muscles atrophy due to lack of use. To prevent this physical decline, crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS) typically spend 2 hours exercising per day.
Monitoring weight in space is not easy, though, since traditional scales don't work in orbit.
The problem was partially solved in 1965 by William Thornton, an American astronaut and doctor who came up with a way to measure objects using oscillating springs. Astronauts still use a similar device today, in which they have to mount a stool fitted with a spring that raises and lowers the stool at a frequency that depends on the mass it is acting against.
The trouble is that this system is bulky and a lot of energy is required to power the moving stool, using up two of the space station's most limited resources. Now Carmelo Velardo, a computer scientist at Eurecom in Alpes-Maritimes, France, says his new system could simply be integrated into the station itself.
"Something that you could easily put inside the walls of the space station would free up the space for other equipment or experiments," Velardo says.
Along with colleagues at the Italian Institute of Technology's Center for Human Space Robotics in Torino, he used the Kinect's depth-sensing ability to create a 3D model of an astronaut. Then the team ran their calculation using a statistical model that links weight to body measurements based on a database of 28,000 people. Velardo's estimates are 97 per cent accurate, corresponding to an average error of just 2.7 kilograms, which is comparable to the current method used on board the ISS.
"This technique appears feasible, although not without some effort," says John Charles, chief scientist on NASA's human research programme in Houston, Texas. He says that microgravity shifts water around inside astronauts' bodies, which means their density may not match the assumptions in the model.
Charles adds that combining the idea with the existing weighing system might prove more beneficial, as the Kinect measures body volume while the stool measures mass. "The combination would provide insights into changes in body density that might be illuminating," Velardo agrees.
The Kinect system has yet to be tested in space, due to the high cost of launching new equipment. But Velardo hopes to try it out soon aboard a parabolic aircraft flight that simulates the microgravity found in orbit. He will present the research at the Emerging Signal Processing Applications conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, next month.

I have learned that each new day is just another day on my spiritual journey
Even a holiday
I know how to look around at any moment and allow the sheer aliveness of it to move me and remind me of the beauty and privilege of being alive.
I have learned that when life falls apart it is also, sometimes falling together.
I now understand that life is not a straight line, that even holidays can have some hurt and joy mixed together and still be rich and good and grounding and worthwhile.
I have learned to honor the ritual of getting together and affirming the bonds of family, friends, and this feeling of being alive. It is it's own reward. These moments are rare enough in our frantic world, however they come, I have learned to let the good of them seep into me and renew my strength and optimism.
I have learned that my family is not meant to, nor able to, meet all my needs, that that is wrong headed and doesn't work.
I have learned that I cannot meet all of any one person's needs, that that is wrong headed and doesn't work.
I have learned that those I love have their own Higher Power and it's not me.
I know that I cannot live without God's help.
I have learned that my integrity is worth more than fame or money and my self respect nourishes me and allows me to hold my head up.
I have learned not to take someone's love for granted, whether or not I think I deserve it, love is always a gift.
I have found my inner peace.
I have learned not to postpone joy for another moment, I will have it now.
I have become aware of all that I have to give thanks for. I "count my blessings" knowing, deep in my heart, that some of my greatest trials are part of my greatest blessings, because they are what forged my character on the anvil of experience.
They are what brought me to where I am.
I know that someday I will look back and see how in those moments, perhaps even this moment, God's hand was there, guiding me, loving me, teaching me and asking me to become more of who I really am and who I can be.
I have learned to love.
I have learned not to sweat the small stuff.
I have learned to appreciate those who love me and to thank God for their presence in my life.
I have learned to value friends.
I have learned to forgive others.
I have learned how to forgive myself.
I have learned that people cannot be more than who they are and that if they let me down it is usually more about them, than me.
And that if I let them down it is usually more about me, than them.
I have learned that God's hand is in everything and everywhere, that there is no empty space in the universe, that all is alive and intelligent and every tiny particle has the power to create something masterful.
I have learned not to quit before the miracle.
I have learned that when I reach out there is always someone or some thing there to reach back.
I have learned to listen.
I have learned what it means to be there for another person.
I have learned what it means to be there for me.
I have learned that people are not on this earth to do what I want them to do or be who I want them to be, that they have a birthright to be who they are and I have a right to feel as I do about it.
And I have learned that I have a responsibility to be who I am, to do my best with what I have been given.
I understand that it's up to me to clean up my unfinished business: whatever has happened may not be my fault, but it is my responsibility to work through what I may carry that could hurt others or myself unnecessarily.
I have learned to:
Keep it Simple: To breathe, breathe, breathe...
Easy Does It: Burning the dinner is less important than being together.
I can Let Go and Let God: If not now, when? If not here, where? If not me , who?
I have learned not to let people disappoint me so very much, not because they are not disappointing but because being overly disappointed isn't good for me, it drains my spirit of it's vitality.
And I understand that I can also be disappointing to people and not have meant anything by it.
I have found faith.
I have found strength.
I have found beauty and purpose.
I have found joy.
I have learned that life is not only what I make of it, but what it makes of me.

Kwanzaa, a Swahili word, is a week-long celebration with each day of the week dedicated to one of seven principles: umoja (unity); kujichagulia (self-determination); ujima (collective work and responsibility); ujamaa (cooperative economics); nia (purpose); kuumba (creativity); and imani (faith). All are based on values prevalent in African cultures.
?The objective of the event is to establish unity and a working relationship to fight poverty which is rampant in both communities,? said Tamrat Medhin, Founder of Little Ethiopia DC, one of the organizers of the event.

MEXICO CITY ? It has come to this: firing an entire police force in a major Mexican port city.
Police in Veracruz-Boca del Rio had become so infiltrated, mainly by the Zetas drug cartel according to one military official, that government officials had no choice but to take the most drastic measure yet against corrupt police in Mexico.
President Felipe Calderon has found out, some say too late, that one of the biggest obstacles to his five-year crackdown on organized crime is the local police, who are often in the employ of drug traffickers.
Since he took office in December 2006, soldiers have seized police weapons in the border city of Tijuana to see if they were used in crimes, and police, sometimes entire forces, are routinely fired or forced out.
Still, Wednesday's move to fire 800 officers and 300 administrative personnel in the Gulf coast city of 700,000 was unprecedented.
Countless efforts to reform police under Calderon and previous administrations have failed. Police have been arrested as suspects in the most egregious organized crime attacks on civilians. Those include mass graves discovered last spring in the border state of Tamaulipas and a casino fire in the northern city of Monterrey that killed 52 in August.
Distrust between local and federal law enforcement has led to armed standoffs and even shootouts between the two.
"We lack the mechanisms for public security, and the situation continues despite the investment of million of pesos in the past," said Miguel Sarre, a security expert at Mexico's Autonomous Institute of Technology. "It's an issue that lacks recognition and commitment on the part of the governors."
The Mexican navy says training new officers to replace the 800 dismissed in Veracruz city will likely take 10 months.
"It was a fairly high percentage of people infiltrated or in collusion," said the armed forces official, who could not be named for security reasons. He did not mention specifics but added that many were threatened into service of the drug cartels and had no choice.
About 800 marines, or navy infantry, will patrol Veracruz, which has one of Mexico's largest commercial ports, the official said.
Veracruz state government officials, meanwhile, disputed that the firing had to do with corruption. Gov. Javier Duarte and federal Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire agreed to the change Monday.
Duarte spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said the dismissal was designed to meet a state and federal agreement to build new police forces certified under stricter standards by January 2013.
None of the dismissed employees are under investigation for corruption, and all can reapply for their jobs, she said.
They'll be required to undergo a rigorous new program of testing and background checks.
"The police force was created under previous administrations and the governor wanted to renovate the force with new police certified at a national level that elicit the confidence of citizens," Dominguez said.
Calderon, who leaves office in December 2012, has promised to create a secure police force. To root out corruption, the federal government has been pushing an elaborate process for vetting all of Mexico's 460,000 police officers, starting with polygraphs, psychological and toxicology tests and personal and medical background checks.
According to federal figures, only 19 percent have been vetted so far, and only 9 percent of the total passed.
In Veracruz, 14 percent of state police and 6 percent of municipal police had been evaluated as of the end of the September. The number who passed was not available.
Mexican police traditionally have had little or no training and are paid low salaries that make them vulnerable to corruption. Calderon launched his attack on organized crime in 2006 with the army because he said it was his most reliable force. Since then, he has expanded federal police from 6,000 to 35,000 with recruits who are fully vetted and better trained and paid. But even federal forces still have problems.
Ten federal police officers were arrested in the northern border city of Ciudad Juarez in September for running an extortion ring.
Mexico's army has taken over police operations elsewhere several times before, notably in Ciudad Juarez and the northern border state of Tamaulipas.
There was so little confidence in Ciudad Juarez police that two years ago, business groups there called for United Nations peacekeepers to quell the drug-related violence.
Tijuana, with what's known as one of Mexico's most corrupt police forces, has seen grandiose gestures aimed at restoring public confidence. In January 2007, federal authorities confiscated officers' firearms for ballistics tests to identify links to organized crime. Some officers carried slingshots in protest while waiting for their guns to be returned.
Starting in December 2007, 270 Tijuana officers on a force of about 2,500 were fired under suspicion of having links to organized crime, with 199 facing criminal proceedings. The effort was led by Julian Leyzaola, who was police director and later public safety chief from 2007 to 2010 and is now the top cop in Ciudad Juarez.
Since December 2010, 46 Tijuana officers have been fired for suspected criminal ties, officials say.
But Veracruz this week became the first Mexican state to completely disband a large police department and use marines as law enforcers. Even Calderon has conceded the Zetas have seized control of the state.
Duarte had already disbanded a police force in the state's capital of Xalapa, but in that case state agents immediately replaced city police.
Veracruz is a common route for drugs and migrants coming from the south on the way up to the United States. It was first dominated by the Gulf cartel, and then its former armed wing, the Zetas, took over after splitting from the cartel. The state saw a rise in crime this spring after a government offensive in neighboring Tamaulipas pushed drug criminals into Veracruz.
The port since has turned into a battleground between the Zetas and a gang aligned with the Sinaloa cartel, which is led by kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. The war in Veracruz reached a bloody peak in September when 35 bodies were dumped on a main highway in rush-hour traffic.
Less than a month later, authorities announced the firing of nearly 1,000 Veracruz state police officers for failing their tests.

COMMENTARY | Undoubtedly, the original American patriots would more than cringe at passage of the National Defense Authorization Act by the Senate and by the House of Representatives this week. As it is, present-day civil rights groups are up in arms about the statutes within the NDAA that allow for the indefinite detention of American citizens by the military.
I agree with the civil rights advocates -- and FBI Director Robert Mueller.
In a case of patriotic irony, the Senate voted 86 to 13 today in passage of the NDAA; today being the official anniversary of the passage of the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights, which constitute the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, guarantee due process of law to citizens, something the statutes within the NDAA threaten.
Even with the passage of the NDAA by the two bodies of Congress, I was feeling safe because President Obama had promised to veto the legislation. Today, White House press secretary Jay Carney revealed that Obama no longer intends to veto the measure. It turns out the statutes relating to indefinite detention of U.S. civilians weren't the statutes President Obama opposed; his interest lay in measures that he and his senior advisers felt limited presidential power in regards to counter-terrorism measures.
According to the Huffington Post Mueller of the FBI stated his concerns with the lack of clarity in the statutes. My concern, mirrored by legislators such as Mark Udall, Dianne Feinstein and Patrick Leahy, is that although the intent of the statute seems to be terrorists connected directly with al-Qaida or similar groups, the wording is open to interpretation. Present or future presidents may interpret the statutes more liberally, using the ability to indefinitely detain Americans who oppose governmental actions or activities -- even groups such as the present Occupy movement.

BANGKOK (AP) ? Masters champion Charl Schwartzel shot a second straight 6-under 66 on Saturday move four strokes behind Lee Westwood at the Thailand Golf Championship.
Westwood led by 11 strokes at the halfway stage after going bogey-free on the opening two days but a 1-over 73 in the third round allowed Schwartzel to cut the deficit.
Schwartzel holed four straight birdies from the 2nd hole and was within three shots of the lead heading to the last but a bogey 5 gave Westwood some breathing space.
Westwood's total of 197 for three rounds left him at 19 under. Schwartzel was at 201, and Michael Thompson of the United States had a 69 to put him in third at 12-under 204.
"I didn't expect to be four shots back at the start of today's round," Schwartzel said. "I knew I had to shoot a low score. Lee didn't play particularly well. I've seen him play much better golf.
"I feel I still need to shoot a 64 or 65 on the last day to get a chance. At least there's a light at the end of the tunnel now. Four shots is not much out there."
Schwartzel came from four shots back to win his first major at the Masters in April.
"I've won about two or three tournaments where I was four shots behind," he said. "I don't know what the secret is. I just play my own game when I'm out there."
Westwood shot a career-low 60 in the first round and followed that with a 64. He had four bogeys on Saturday as his form dipped.
"After a 60 and 64, you have to be a bit realistic unfortunately," Westwood said. "A lot of people are going to think you're going to shoot 60, 62 and 64 every day but I'm afraid golf is not like that. Every day you have to reset your goals and your sights.
"A four-shot lead into the last round is a good position to be in."

FRIDAY, Dec. 16 (HealthDay News) -- HIV-infected drug users are 74 percent more likely to have an overdose than those without HIV, a new evidence review finds.
Behavioral and biological factors may be among the reasons for this increased risk, according to the Rhode Island Hospital researchers. Drug overdose is a frequent cause of non-AIDS death among people with HIV.
The link between HIV infection and drug use is well documented, but the association between HIV and overdose has received less attention and was the focus of this study, which involved a review of 24 previous studies.
"Over the past 30 years, we have made impressive strides in caring for and prolonging the lives of people with HIV. Our study found that premature death by overdose is an issue that affects people with HIV disproportionately," study leader Traci Green, a researcher with Rhode Island Hospital and the Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research, said in a hospital news release.
"It is not entirely clear why the risk is greater, and few studies have endeavored to figure out why this might be happening," she added.
Biological factors may include clinical status, weakened immune systems, opportunistic infections and poorer physical health among HIV-infected drug users. Some research has suggested that hepatitis C infection and other conditions that affect metabolic ability may also increase the risk of overdose, according to the release.
Behavioral factors -- such as high-risk lifestyles and an increased rate of psychiatric conditions -- may also contribute to the higher risk of overdose among HIV-infected drug users, Green said.
Other possible factors could include homelessness and poverty, and poor access to medications and therapy used to treat opioid dependence, she suggested. Many HIV patients take opioid painkiller drugs as part of their treatment, while others use illegal opioids.
The study appears online in advance of print in the journal AIDS.
"Bringing overdose awareness and prevention into the HIV care setting is critical to reducing overdose deaths," Green said.
"Health care providers who treat HIV-infected patients with a history of substance abuse or who are taking opioid medications should consider counseling patients on how to reduce their risk of overdose. They may also consider prescribing naloxone (Narcan) to patients, or offering a referral to MAT (medication-assisted therapy) to reduce the risk of overdose," she advised.
Naloxone is a prescription medication that reverses an opioid overdose and has no abuse potential.

Actress plays a 'practical, salt-of-the-earth' character in 'We Bought a Zoo.'
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Scarlett Johansson in "We Bought A Zoo"
Photo: Twentieth Century Fox
Anyone who has followed Scarlett Johansson's career will agree that she carved out a niche for herself early with several roles as "the fantasy girl." Those looking for that side of Johansson might be disappointed to learn that there is nothing "forced sexy" about her character in her latest film, "We Bought a Zoo."
When MTV News caught up with Johansson recently, we asked if it was refreshing to play "normal" and not have to appear scantily clad at any point in "Zoo."
"Yes, that's always refreshing. It means you can eat more," Johansson joked about remaining fully clothed. "For me, one of the big draws of the film was exactly that. It was the fact that I was not playing the girl who is always bridesmaid never a bride, or looking for a husband, or the other woman — none of those things. She's a very practical, salt-of-the-earth, rounded, motivated, independent woman. I find as I get older, it's nice to move away from the ingénue category.
"It's fun, and I've done very well by it, but it's nice to be able to transition into women that come with a history, that are established," she added.
We brought up the fact that the female characters in Cameron Crowe movies ("Almost Famous," "Say Anything" "Jerry Maguire") tend to be attracted to the emotionally broken and confused leading men. When we asked Johansson if she is attracted to that type of guy, she found the question hilarious.
"Oh God, a midlife-crisis guy — that sounds horrible!" she said, laughing. " 'Are you in between jobs? Are you broken from a previous relationship? Do you need dental work?' No, no, [I'm] not at all [attracted to that type]. I look for confidence and wit and charm."
There you have it, guys. Mr. Johansson need only possess those three key traits.
Check out everything we've got on "We Bought a Zoo."

'Tis just weeks before Christmas and all through the land,
The prospects for Republicans aren't looking so grand.
As dear Santa is donning his festive red suit,
Both on network and cable, all we hear of is Newt.
Pawlenty dropped out, then we lost Herman Cain,
Of initial contenders, only several remain.
Perry stays on, though we know he can't win it,
For whenever he opens his mouth... foot is in it.
And Bachmann, my goodness, her campaign is failin',
She's enough to make feminists love Sarah Palin.
And then there's Ron Paul, a most loveable crank,
That he can't be elected, lucky stars we must thank.
Another one who simply can't find a quorum,
Is the earnest young moralist, Richard Santorum.
No matter how much sanctimony he floats,
It seems nobody, listens, he garners no votes.
And what must be going through Romney's poor mind?
When no matter who falters, he still stays behind.
Like the kid on the playground, with brand new gym shoes,
Mitt's the very last pick, for they all know he'll lose.
How ironic for Huntsman, another Latter-Day Saint,
Is losing to Gingrich, (who a Saint he sure ain't!)
Huntsman and Mitt, Mormon men all their lives,
And it's Newt who's had fun taking multiple wives!
But Newt is the man, and he's most entertaining,
And the fun just gets better, as the polls show him gaining.
He takes millions from Freddie, "just consulting," he claims,
Nope, he'd never take money to advance Freddie's aims.
He never would lobby, he's just a historian,
He proclaims with a sneer and a tone quite stentorian.
And among the grand plans he declares for the nation,
Is a whole new approach to poor kids' education.
Clean toilets! Sweep floors! That will teach them to learn,
How to get off the dole... their own keep they should earn.
Because black kids in poverty have it too easy,
The fathers are lazy and the mothers are sleazy.
Political memories have too rapid extinction,
For we seem to forget Newt's most ignoble distinction.
His greatest achievement, not campaigns or speeches,
Is how Congress addressed Newt's deep ethical breaches.
Peers delivered a stern, quite direct, reprimand,
And fined Newt the Speaker about $300 grand,
In all of our history, only once this transpired.
(If it happened to you or to me, we'd be fired.)
But Newt's made of Teflon and his every transgression,
Just goes poof as he genuflects, goes to Confession,
Whatever his faith at the time happens to be,
He's got some religion to lean on, to say, "Forgive me."
But even if Newt wins each coming primary,
Imagine the huge load of baggage he'll carry!
But let's not complain, not be driven to tears,
'Cause it also means Barack gets another 4 years!
But enough about Newt, 'tis the season for joy,
And to all Huff Post readers, to each girl and each boy,
Whether atheist, Muslim, or fan of the Pontiff,
Merry Christmas to some and to others, Good Yontiff!
